I've had great luck with MSD and Accel. Two companies that seem to be loved or hated. I think it depends on what you get out of the box on a unit per unit basis.

I love how you said "right away", like it is inevitable.

You mean I'm not supposed to hit the rev limiter on every shift? The first engine didn't last even a day after I got it running, and that was with me only revving it until the power dropped off. Unfortunately the power dropped off significantly when rods started exiting the block during a joy ride. At least the rollbar is at a good height for pushing. I do have a tach now, but it's just a little bar graph unit that's kinda hard to see. It's more useful as a speedometer/odometer to meet inspection requirements. I'm probably too used to auto crossing it, it just about lives on the rev limiter then.

Haha yeah understood. Too bad you don't have room for an SHO motor. Same bell housing pattern as the Vulcan, and can live at 7,000 rpm's all day.

Have one in my buggy:

Yes, the SHO engine would be nice. That was the plan initially, until I realized how big they are. I even bought a car with a blown transmission to use, but ended up fixing the transmission and driving it instead. Mine was an auto with a 3.2, and it shifted at 7500. I read an article about the SHO engines that claimed they could handle 9500, but the rev limiter was lower so that the ac compressor and power steering pump would last. Aren't the SHO engines pretty heavy too? The pushrod V6 I'm using seems to last pretty decent at 6000, which isn't too awful low. The previous one spent a lot of time up there when I was auto crossing it and never had any issues until I ran it hard on slicks with not enough oil in it. I hopefully won't make that mistake again.

Heh, heh, heh...

Somewhere I have a picture of an SHO V6 in my shop, sitting next to a 525 CID big block Ford stroker motor.

The SHO was BIGGER... not as long, but taller and much wider.

I also have a picture of a 350 Chevy piston sitting crosswise in the bore of a 512 stroker... just to show the difference in bore size.

Many of those strokers had more displacement per *cylinder* than the whole motor in my Geo...

It is a big motor for only 3 liters and it's heavy as well with that high nickel content cast iron block and huge DOHC heads. Fully dressed, as it came out of the 89-95 Taurus SHO's, it weighs 492 pounds wet. In my buggy, stripped down to fighting weight, it's about 400.

Oh, but that torque curve! So much room under that curve. I get 350 at the crank with the single turbo limited to 7 PSI of boost on a bone stock junkyard motor. I can do up to 13 PSI without having to change any internals, but 7 PSI is a wooley booger of a ride already so I leave it there.
