Ditto. Another advantage not previously mentioned is the front leg (legs, including the UCA) adjustments set camber and rear leg adjustments set caster. And Doh! I missed the mention of the steering rack in a.moore's comment; yep, that makes sense.

this looks like a great project !
i think your totaly right you have a clean slate so design your own chassis .
using a miata or RX8 suspension is a good way to go they are light and you can get them any were cheap .
if it was me i would build the car using a 1000cc motorcycle motor .
i would do it for many reasons .
the 1st being you will have a motor and gear box all in one that will have less weight than just a transmission alone .
then there is the power a bike motor can or does put out .
in my car it puts out 164 HP with 93 foot LBS tork . that is more than most 4 cylinder car motor put out .
by using a bike motor you then can build the chassis light and keep the weight down on the hole car to about 800 LBS .
if you have ever driven a D-sports car or a F1000 car you will know 1st hand you don't need a big motor to go like hell . power to weight is what it's all about .
