...Heater fittings cont'd-

Easiest to weld these little dudes together into a bracket that mounts with one small bolt from above..

Late May, 2017..

A wideshot of the engine bay as I begin to route intercooler plumbing and determine where coolant hoses will be routed...

Last few pics show a bit of repair needed for the grille surround.. 2 of the tabs were broken off and I had to fashion a way to replace them (red arrows).. Since the surround is already in chrome, and it's really in pretty nice shape, I can't weld on it, so although I've never used it before, I thought this might be the time and place to try JB-Weld.. some guys swear by it, some say don't bother... thought I'd give it a go, and if it doesn't hold, I'll find another solution in the future...

ccrunner, I'm not saying that the JB will work. I will say that I tried it when trying to fit a SB Chevy thermostat neck to my RX7 engine. I filled a couple of counter bored holes and re-drilled to fit the RX bolt pattern. It worked flawlessly for the last 6 years.

As part of my job, I have had some experience selecting epoxies over the years. Most I would not have tried for this. In your application I think you will be just fine.

Axles came back from Dutchman.. should work well once I'm able to source some inner (Ford 7.5" IRS) CV boots (pic has an old boot in place-- they're hard to source because of the 3 funky 'divots' in the bearing barrel).. seems they're obsolete and have no aftermarket support

So setting the axles aside for now, attention turns to finishing up the floors.. I didn't need a whole big replacement panel for each side, so I took some 16g sheet, had a few stiffening beads rolled into the panels, and bent/trimmed them to fit.. Not exactly OEM, but then neither is the rest of the car at this point

School's out! Early June, 2017

I'm a bit behind on the build log, as now that I'm on break I'm blitzing this project pretty hard.. I'll try and catch up in the next short while..

Big picture, I'm trying to have this thing ready for a road trip by August 9... Some days I think I'm going to make it, and other days methinks no way.. All I can do is go out to the garage and chip away at it, assuming I'll get a little lucky; have no major snags, and make my self-imposed deadline..

So on with the fun! Every day now it's 100+ degrees here  , so lots of sweat equity happening right now..

Little stuff first.. with the front floors in, had a chance to lay the rest of the Dynamat... Moved on to fabbing a bracket for the radiator overflow tank.. decided to mount it up in the dead space on the front of the motor..

.. with the radiator overflow tank in place, I was able to get an accurate measurement for the radiator shroud.. laid it out on paper, and while I'd like to have fabbed it in aluminum, had to do it in light gauge sheetmetal so I could weld it myself.. turns out it's pretty light anyway..

Early June 2017

The paper prototype fan shroud seemed sound, so time to build it for real.. you'll notice my fancy brake made of 1x1

More puzzle pieces... with the radiator overflow in, and the fan shroud done, I could focus on using the ever-decreasing space to cram more stuff around the engine.. in this case, turbo and radiator plumbing..

Again here I'm limited because I can't weld aluminum, so I made the turbo plumbing in steel.. not the best choice, but if it ever comes to bug me enough, I can always go back and do it again in aluminum (I suspect I'll be happy with this though)..

As stated, it's getting tougher and tougher to fit things in this engine bay.. I'm going to have a very tight hood clearance issue up at the driver's side rear edge of the hood for the 2.5" duct to clear.. I think it will jusssst make it

In the past I've used our swimming pool as a leak-test station, but my wife is onto me (since the motorcycle tank in the pool incident), so I'm now using a storage tub to serve as a means to find any leaks.. I'm pumping all the steel tubes up to 30 psi... I had more leaks than I care to admit, but after much time and fussing, I've chased them all down

**note the Dollar Store toilet brush (slightly modified) to help scrub the inside of the tubes.. pure class around here

The last of the turbo pipes to fab is the biggest, as it wraps around the engine bay to get back up to the fmic.. This piece took quite a bit of fussing with all of the angles to consider, but I'm pretty sure I've got it dialed in now..

I'm a bit paranoid about leaving shavings and 'junk' inside of these tubes for the engine to ingest.. the toilet brush method wouldn't work on this long piece, so I had to resort to a tube sock tied to 2 electrical cords to scrub this one's innards.. Like the others, I had several leaks (gotta stop welding when it's windy :? ).. chased 'em down, and now onto the next thing..

Necessity is the mother of invention. Or something like that. Looking like you will soon be driving. I'm waiting for a 1st drive video.

Now that it's done (yeah I know), why couldn't that turbo tube go forward, down, and under the radiator. Seems like it would have been about half as long. Is it because the end on the turbo is cast and points aft?

(Quoting myself from this build log on Jan 25, 2017)

..."I truly miss driving a 'cool' car (no, the daily driver commute car doesn't count!), so it's time to ratchet things up a bit.. As she sits, the car is nowhere near running, but I'm driving her to Reno, NV on August 10, 2017 for the Hot August Nights car show..."

===================================================================================

Now here I sit, the Monday after the big deadline, the big show, and I hang my head a bit as I did not get the car to Reno this year :(

Not for lack of trying though... In the next few weeks I'll get this build log caught up as it's now behind.. In a nutshell, I worked my arse off all summer to make deadline, but there were simply too many setbacks and issues to overcome.. To be honest, I was getting pretty burned out toward the end of July, having spent the prior two months in the 100+ degree garage.. Still, I adore this car, and once I get work life on track (school is now back in session), I'll shake off the blahs and get back to it..

I the meantime, I got myself to the car show (sans the Volvo), and had a great time.. so much to see and do.. Here are a few pics...

Early Summer 2017

The next many postings will be me playing catch up as this build log is now behind... It was a busy summer, in a good way, and now it's time to get caught up to 'real time'...

By late May and early June, I was getting the turbo plumbing routed, as my attention turned to routing duct work to hang the air filter out on the cold air side of the radiator support wall, up under the the nose and just behind the grille.. It's tight, but ultimately all went in nicely..
