Minor dash details.. the replacement plate (left of steering column).. a stripped wide shot of the lower half, and a wide shot of the upper half as I attempt to remove the goopy foam and glue..

Last shot of the upper section being stripped..

The 3 small holes in the dash (OEM- fuel/oil/clock) are a bit too big to secure my Speedhut gauges, so I'm shrinking them a bit with these square cheater plates tacked in from behind..

A few shots of the smaller-diameter holes in place for the Speedhut fuel, oil pressure, and coolant temp gauges..

Well I feel a little dumb.. the 2 screwed-on flat metal strips on the leading edge of the dash (pic above) don't belong there at all.. As I took the homemade upholstery of the PO off, I wrongly assumed the metal strips were Volvo bits, but whoever covered this dash last used them as a way to add a sharp leading edge to their home brew dash pad.. pretty clever actually :)

Anyway, the new dash pads just arrived from IPD, which is what tipped me off that those strips are not OEM.. Off they go.. The new, not cheap upper and lower pads are so nice compared to what I've just pulled apart! I don't think they're 700.00 nice, but these interiors are not known for being thrifty to restore.. In the pic, I've just got the lower pad draped on to give an idea of how it's going to come together.. looks really nice I think

Also took a minute to mock up one of the little gauges with the OEM bezel in place.. Probably won't please any purists, but I like it 8)

The next several pics are of my efforts to rework the stock 1800S dash and integrate modern gauges and Vintage Air AC bits.. Not sure if anyone other than a Volvo 1800 owner would care as this is model/make specific, but it still covers trying to blend old and new on some level...

First pic is the stripped and primered upper dash section, as well as the OEM aluminum veneer (I love the aluminum fascia on these early dashes)...

Next few pics are of gauge blending.. I had to open up the big (4.5") Speedhut gauges and fab in some mounting studs.. just enough room to sneak them in....

A pic to show the new studs on the back of the larger gauges..

Now that the big gauges have a way to bolt to the dash, had to fill the 2 large stock holes..

Had to take the small, fine edge trim off of the dash veneer and clean it up before re-gluing it in place.. it's always the small, fiddly stuff that takes more time than you'd think..

Most of the gauges are mocked into their OEM bezels and ready for a trial installation as soon as I finish modding and covering the dash..

Holes are marked for the AC controls and vents..

No turning back now.. new AC control panel and vents are dropped down into their new holes for final trimming/fitting..

That odd-shaped gauge...

The first pic shows the stock configuration for the oil/water temp gauge.. I would love to have retained this, but it no longer matches the other gauges, and it seems good real estate to mount the 3rd AC vent in an already minimalist dash.. So for this one, I took a 4.5" vent and shaved down the outside edges by about 1/16" each to have it snugly fit into the stock bezel.. I still need to make tiny filler plates at either end to complete the look better, but I think it will cleanly blend in and look like it belongs when it's done..

Another pic of the re-purposed Volvo bezel..

So now that the stock rectangle bezel is a vent housing, I need to make it air-tight and morph into a 2.5" circle/lip behind the dash so that I can attach an AC duct hose to it.. Bottom 2 pics just show closing it off.. note the circle (marker) where the piece of 2.5" tubing/lip will be welded for the duct to attach to..

Last few pics from this weekend's work.. Wide shots of the front and rear of the lower dash section (red arrow to show the 2.5" duct lip)..

I think I'm done welding on this now, so onto making a very expensive dash pad fit, even if it doesn't quite want to..

A nice little package in the mail.. first pic is my AC pressure sensor fitting that's now welded into place thanks to fellow member Sean in CT- Thanks Sean

2nd pic shows the dash progress.. got an extra lower left-side dash veneer from Don at p1800.com (red circle), and will cut it to fit over onto the right side.. the goal is to lose the ashtray and have it still look stock when all the vents are in, and save the one seam (yellow line), it should look like it was built this way..

Dash detail work continues.. just moving, trimming and blending bits to fit..

Speaking of fit.. these pads are about $350 each  , and I'd expect for that price that they'd be perfect, and would be 'ready to install'.. They are not.. While the quality appears to be quite good, the manufacturer was sloppy with 'extra' padding where it shouldn't be (at the edges) that needs to be trimmed back (Tedious, time-consuming, and stressful in the event that yo cut too deep..) Also, these lower OEM aluminum veneer sections had to be reworked/trimmed/tweaked to fit in the dash stamping- that should not have been the case, and I'm not the first one to have this issue.. Mine will not be a 'show' car, but if I was restoring to that level, I'd be less than happy..

Got these pads at IPD, and hopefully they'll get their supplier to fix these admittedly minor issues, or adjust their prices accordingly..

Still working on the dash.. a few pics with gauges and vents in place, also back of dash as wires start sprouting..

3rd pic shows the need to move a wiper bracket leg as it's in a space where the driver's side windshield vent duct needs to pass through..
