More Christmas Break 2015

BBlue- the hood on the 1800 is really similar to your Alpine in it's size/shape.. Near as I can measure, the hood offers about 1.5" more clearance.. I'm staying as absolutely low as possible as I'm worried about having the turbo charge tube right up on top of the engine.. I'd like to keep it as far from the underside of the hood as possible..

More front clip fun.. Had to remedy someone's boogered up fix for the cracked-out upper shock mount on the passenger side.. Looked close at the driver's side, and it's starting to crack there too (a known issue on these clips).. just went ahead and scalped them both and put way-too-thick steel in place.. Also carved out clearance for the LNF oil pan and AC pump..

Not too exciting, but moving forward nonetheless

That's looking awesome. I had to modify the cross member on the Mustang II front end of TETANUS to fit the 'yota 2TC in a space designed for a Mazda 12A. It was full of mouse house too. Thought I was going to puke doing the cutting with a zip wheel.

Keep the pics coming. I'm living vicariously through everyone's updates while my shoulder heals.

Downtime sucks :( -I feel for ya..

Back in 2000 I had shoulder surgery for a tear.. got 3 tiny screws put in to re-anchor things and I was out of commission for about 6 weeks.. I remember being unhappy because I had to take so much time off of running..

Fast forward 15 years, and the same shoulder is giving me problems again.. the burning in the joint is back, as well at the sensation of being stabbed with an icepick in the joint if I raise my hand too high..

So I have an appointment to get it checked.. I really don't want to be the cranky old fart bitching about his health, so I'll say this; I'm blessed that missing my running is still a concern, and I'm probably about due for a month-long break from the garage anyway ..

Heal quickly TooBusy

Size Matters

I had to either narrow the motor or widen the suspension pivot points because things were just too tight.. I can't shrink the engine, so I was able to find the needed space by modifying the UCA bushing design itself..

My 63 has the 'early' bushings, which have the control arm mounted via 2 small u-bolts.. Later Volvos would update the design to the more traditional pressed in bushings.. I decided I can safely mod these existing arms to suit my needs by welding in the bushing collars and eliminating the u-bolt.. this gives me an additional 1" total, which is all that I needed :)

I beefed up/ gusseted in the collars, so should be good to go. (btw- I could have sourced a pair of later 1800S upper arms to get the same result, but I'm still not 100% sure this is the front suspension of choice, so I'm trying to use what I have before I totally commit to a front end..

Time to mock the motor into the clip to see how things fit..

I first had to make little feet for the crossmember so I can get it to sit upright (square) as I plan to fab up motor mounts soon and I need everything level.. Then I just floated the motor from the crane to check for fit.. need to go back an re-do a bit of the crossmember to better clear the oil pan on one end.. other than that, it's motor mount time

How wide is this engine at the circled pinch points? Keep wondering how well this engine would work in an Alpine, but it sure looks wide in the wrong places.

<Bill- exactly 20"... this engine would be sweet in your Alpine :D , but there's no way your stock steering (and likely suspension) would stay.. When I was looking into early Alpines for this engine, I just thought of it as a given that the front needed a major rework to fit this motor..

Time for motor mounts.. Space is an issue on this build, and after researching a few options, I dug through my pile-o-parts and found a couple of Miata LCA bushings that I thought would work.. The driver's side was a bit more challenging, so I did it first- had to work around the dipstick.. The metal tab welded to the top is just a bracket to hold the OEM vacuum reservoir..

Passenger side.. just trying to keep it low and close to the block.. (The bushing is attached in a much more substantial way than the pics make it seem..)

Great idea recycling the control arms and if they ever do need replacing, a urethane drop in is available and with spares.

Thank you, but that ain't gonna happen. It is way beyond my abilities (even if I could see to weld) and I intend to finish out my life driving the Alpine, not rebuilding it.

I inquired as the subject of using one of these engines comes up pretty frequently, but I'd about written it off as being too wide and requiring a major rebuild of the front of the car. I can now make that an accepted fact and will spread the word at appropriate times.

Your second choice of cars was a great one, it will be a great long trip driver. I do wonder about controlling a direct injection, turbo charged engine. Sounds like you will have to use the OEM stuff, do you have room for it? There is no way all that would would fit in an Alpine.

Bill

The goal is to have this project running and reliable for DD use by early Oct 2016, when my oldest daughter starts to drive.. this car will be my DD, and she gets the appliance I'm currently driving.. 9 months to go... :|

Still on the uphill side of cutting and trimming.. the firewall is close to where I need it- just a some minor trimming left to do up there, but it's time to hack out the OEM tranny tunnel.. I'm now able to position the motor/trans pretty much where it will be mounted, which has revealed a few minor issues.. the OEM oil cooler will have to be cut out (yellow circle) as it's in the way of where I want the gas pedal.. Also, it's now confirmed that all 3 pedals will shift to the left about 2"... I'll also have a problem with trying to fit a power brake booster where it's supposed to go as the intake wants that real estate.. the booster will have to go even farther to the left (toward the driver's fender).. none of this is insurmountable, just more to the puzzle, and that's where the fun lies, isn't it?

Stock tranny tunnel comes out, and I'm getting close to switching from cutting to fabbing sheet metal back in.. Also a pic of the beginnings of the crossmember-side motor mount towers..

Not sure if the Volvo uses them but Lockheed made remote power brake servos. they could be mounted anywhere. I have seen some mounted in the fender cavity on MGA's. I always thought that one could fab a similar setup using about any OEM servo by adding a master to the brake pedal assy and a slave cylinder on the input side of the boost servo. You easily have the skills to do this. Locating this remotely could certainly clean up the area. Just a thought.

I have a pair of the Lockheed remote power brake servos that came as part of my Ultima build and were to be mounted in the fender cavities. Ended up not using them. They've been sitting on my "need to have a garage sale" shelf and are new, unused and are complete with br@ck^ts. Drop me a note if you are interested in them.
