That's a good thought. I could make it the height of the front of the seat pan and put a solid lid on it. Maybe incorporate a cupholder or something else useless. Not likely to ever have anyone in my back seat.

I looked at my companion box again last night and realized that the inertia reel is bolted to it. I'm thinking that I will cut mine down level with the seat pan like you said and then add bracing for the inertia reel. The Nissan rear seat is exactly the same width as the Mini interior once the companion box is out of the way.

It would be easy enough to remove the companion box and cover the gap between the inner rocker and the outer body.
Fab up a reinforcing plate for the inertia reel, then just extend the rear seat pan out to the outer body.

Not the route I'm planning, but it would be a short day's fab work to go that route.

Weekend garage time.
I spent most of yesterday steam cleaning the front subframe. I had scraped off the big gunk a while back and pressure washed it once already. Yesterday scrape, degrease, steam, pressure wash, then acid etch and paint.

I bolted in the subframe so I could line everything up.

Today it was time to do some more metal work.
First up, make the right side inner fender. This was a simple panel with just a couple of slight bends and a curve to match the fender line.
Once I was happy with the shape I welded on a lip to have something to weld to the fender.

Then over to the other inner fender. It was bent and tweaked from a wreck years ago. Some hammer and dolly work to get it to the right height and shape to match the fender.

The front valance panel is bolted to the subframe with a 1/16th inch spacer. I needed the little spacer to get everything lined up properly without being in a bind.

Then welded on the fenders.

Last order of business was fabbing up the companion box. a few measurements, some lines with a sharpie marker and cut it out with the zip wheel.
It took about 3 test fits to get it just right, but all in all I'm pretty happy with the result of eyeballing it.

I picked up a few new cuts and burns, but it was worth it.

Companion box - what's that? (but I was afraid to ask). Thank you for the photo! But what a name! Must have come from an early BMC brochure .....

It's one of the many places to trap water and cause rust in classic Minis.
doesn't serve much purpose other than that.

It was easier to put it back in than to remove the other one and re-engineer an alternative. I only tacked it to the floor in a few places. There will be LOTS of undercoating and paint to protect the new steel.

The floor pans were acid etched last weekend before the primer went on. Hopefully next Saturday I'll shoot the undercoating inside and out.

I never did get out to the plant today to do hot laps in the F500. I may stink up the place again next weekend with ugly driving.

Not much work on the Mini today.
Got up planning to drink some coffee, then head to the garage.
Second sip of first cup of coffee, Wifey Dearest says, "Want to go for a walk?" Which if you've been married for any length of time, you know means, Honey put on your shoes, we're going for a walk.

We're getting ready for a long walk in September, so this is training. I finish my coffee and off we go for a 4 mile walk. About the farthest point from the house and the rain starts. Whatever, at least I wasn't sweating anymore. :lol:

Come back and it's time for a trip to the foot Doc. Turns out she has tight hamstrings causing problems.

Back home at 11ish Time to fire up the smoker. I've got a 7lb Boston Butt that's just begging for 7 hours of low and slow.
about an hour in just getting some nice color

Oh yeah mid afternoon I brushed on the first coat of rubberized undercoat. This is interesting stuff. Out of the can it's thin as water, sprinkle in the rubber dust, then mix in the catalyst and it INSTANTLY becomes thick, rollable, brushable, sprayalbe (we'll find out about that part tomorrow) STICKY goo. The kit comes with all the components and a spray gun.

It looks better in person than it does in the pic.

more of the undercoat today

Take the car off the dolly and roll it on it's side in the grass.

First coat of undercoating brushed and rolled on. The spraying thing, didn't work so well. My compressor didn't like the air needed at 90 psi.

Let it cure for a couple of hours and worked on some other stuff.
Then rolled it onto it's other side for the second coat and the other wheel wells.

After that cured for a couple of hours, set it back on the cart and called it a day.

I'm going to have to decide between leaving under the hood in undercoat / black and going body color.

Time for a bite to eat and an ice cold beer.

I'm trying to decide if there is anything I hate more than bondo. I'm not good at it and it frustrates me to no end.

put it on, sand it off, repeat until you feel like bashing your own head in.

Ya know, a little properly applied filler will make your bashed in head look good as new :wink:

So I spent a little time in the garage yesterday, spread on, sand off spread on sand off.

I feel like the karate kid training to do bodywork.

About mid day the temperature and humidity REALLY shot up. I was working in the shade with the Mini pushed about 1/2 way out of the garage and the box fan creating a breeze. Still it wasn't enough. I was pounding down water and Gatorade, but just couldn't stay cool.

Packed up the tools about 12:30 and spent the rest of the day on the couch.
This is the first time that I've felt really bad since having the cardiac ablation.

I don't know if the Mini will be finished in time for tailgating at the current pace.

I talked to a good friend's son today who just happens to be a professional body and paint guy looking for some work on the side...

Meeting him this afternoon to go over the Mini from front to back and come up with a price. If he takes on the bodywork, I'll get cracking on the engine refresh while I have open space in the garage.

I enjoy following this build... Lots of intricate repair work and skill involved.. I'm going through the eternal process of body/paint work, and I'm with you... It's an arduous task.. I'm going on two months at 100 degrees most days, and I've had enough... It's tedious and tiresome.. I hope your lead pans out and you're able to move onto the engine work- not so Mr Miagi and a bit more fun :cheers:

Good luck on the deadline- without them I'd never get done..
