Very early stages of intense thinking right now. But hears few pics for those who don't know what a 360 is.

This is my 90 % restored 1970 Subaru 360 Young I call Spud because I found it in Idaho. After I get it painted It will be done. If they are ever done.

I might just build this first for practice. It's a Subaru Burro. Designed by Tiny Higler the same guy that designed the baja 1000 wining Burro. It would be much easier. It uses all 360 components. It would also come in handy testing upgrades and reproduction parts for the 360.

The body might end up looking like this. It is a "Dune Buggy" version of the 360. Only 24 - 30 of these were ever made. They were actually ordered by Subaru of America at the time so it is a factory approved version.

It may start looking like this if I use this Young body, the one on the right.

This is project row in the new 98% finished garage. Starting on the left is another 360 deluxe, A 360 Pickup, and the Dune Buggy.

And finally this is the first 360 I bought. It is known as Hippie on the 360 drivers club forum. I bought it from a woman in PA who drove it 48000 miles between high school and college. It runs but needs a fair amount of body work and brake work.

Lots of interesting projects, but I'm not sure what you want to do.

Due to the short wheelbase and narrow track, a medium sized, liquid cooled motorcycle drive line (750cc or smaller) seems like a good idea, connected to an IRS jackshaft and 530 chain or belt.

After taking a better look at the size of the car and the design of the suspension and brakes, I think a 750 is too much.

I found some interesting links; some are a bit harsh but still interesting to read.

Do you want a car that looks like a subbie 360 or an “improved” 360?
Since the engine and transaxle are integral, so a differential, transmission, and engine are required.
Since the axles locate the wheels laterally and the car is a unibody, some framing and suspension will be required.
Since the wheels are 10 inch split rims and drum brakes, I’d be very concerned about having more than 45 hp.
Off the shelf automotive irs is too wide without custom axles.
If you want an “improved” 360, I’d look into using the driveline from a 2wd atv with around 500cc, used. Most atv dealers have plenty of used atvs as repo for parts they can sell. Use the entire irs (make sure it has a differential) including spindles, brakes, and 10 inch rims for the rear, removing the torsion bar trailing arm system. Run standard wall thickness ¾” gas pipe (1 inch od) underneath to the front to fit the radiator behind the grill.
At this point you could add a more effective heater and defroster also.
I expect the alternator capacity and regulator design will be an improvement too.

Looking to make an improved 360 I can take to car shows and possibly auto cross. I want to use as many subie parts as possible. I am planning to widen the fenders at the least and possibly stretch the length behind the driver a bit and possibly up front also. I'm planning a frame build. the unibody just doesn't look stout enough for adding subframes with 150 + hp. I'd love to go 360 hp but if I can keep the weight under 1500 lbs 150 hp would suffice. It would also be cool if I could tow a trailer with the restored original 360 too.

If the admin could combine the two threads I've started that would be great.
