Got some sheepish answers, some guys want to argue, it varies... Sometimes, they re-class their car for the next event.

I didn't protest but I did have a chat with the co drivers. Told them that it's great having new people in the group and look forward to seeing them at the next event. Then let them know they need to read the rule book. We have quite a few folks in the street touring and street prepared categories. Got the sheepish look from the one with the better time. He knew he was busted.

The other said the mods didn't make a difference.

I told him no they didn't, he still got his ass beat by an old man in a 20 year old bone stock beater by almost 3 seconds.

So today after work I headed over to a friends house to FINALLY retrieve the A Mod. It's been sitting idle in our friends garage since February 11th when I ran out of time to getting prepped for the first event.

Since we closed on the new house I have been SLOWLY getting projects done around here. The garage is wired and insulated. All of the drywall is hung and all but 12 feet of seams are taped and mudded. No finish sanding yet as there needs to be at least one more coat of mud with a wider knife. That's a project for another day.

The point is the garage is "good enough" for now and I need to get crap done on the race car.

Anyway, last weekend didn't work out to pick up the bike motor. Never could coordinate schedules with the guy. We have agreed on Saturday morning. I'll roll out early and head that way with hopes of being home before 1 pm.

Tomorrow or Friday I'll yank the 2 stroke and take the chassis to the car wash to blow off the oily spooge.

Time to get back into build mode.

Picked up the motor yesterday up in Charlotte. He talked me into taking the go kart frame too. It has a nice Morse cable on it and motor mounts already built I can adapt to the A Mod. A few mount bits will find their way onto the car as well.

Today, pulled the 2 stroke and had to cut the rear uprights from behind the roll bar to be able to drop the Honda motor in place.

Now I've got the front sprocket, new chain, and a chain breaker on order. They should all be here this week while I'm in Michigan for work.

Making exhaust pipes will be a little interesting, but it looks like I'll have plenty of room when I slide the motor back.

Spent a little time yesterday afternoon staring at the motor, the jackshaft, and final drive trying to decide what to do.

If I center the motor in the frame the transmission output gear is about 1 1/2 inches to the left of the final drive gear when viewed from the rear of the car.

I can shift the motor to the right, but I'm not sure if I should. It looks like there is just enough space for me to offset the motor and run what roughly looks like a standard length motorcycle chain.

The other option is to center the motor in the frame and slide another gear onto the jackshaft. There is plenty of clearance between the gear on the jackshaft and the bearing cartridge. I have a gear that came with the go cart frame that's the right bore and surprisingly the same tooth count as the gear on the shaft now. The chain would be pretty short as it looks like the center to center distance is less than 12 inches.

My concerns are twofold.
First, adding complexity and an additional failure point in the driveline.
Second, I've read that short chains tend to have short lives.

What say you folks?

I would go with a straight shot on the chain and if possible offset the cooling system to balance the wt.
If you are really concerned about chain wear, use the largest counter shaft sprocket size that you can and still have the correct ratio. Dave W

ebay purchases are arriving. I have the front sprocket, new chain, fuel pump, and a shifter lever here. Still waiting on the chain breaker to show up.

Tomorrow I'll yank the motor back out and grind away paint where motor mounts will get welded.
Then mock up motor mounts with the motor blocked up on the work bench. With a little luck I'll get the fuel pump and lines installed.

Playing it by ear as I never know when something else will take precedence. Just trying to have a plan, a backup, and an alternate.

Quick update from this past weekend.
I managed to pick up the flu on my trip to Michigan for work last week. Not one to let fever, chills, or coughing grind my weekend to a halt, I was in the garage moving slowly.

I ordered a 116 link 530 chain last week. A little quick mockup showed that was plenty of length and I could easily slide the motor to the right and have a straight shot with the chain. Plenty of room in the chassis and no mods required to the final drive setup or need to add the jackshaft back in.

I busted out the bailing wire to balance the motor in place where I wanted it with the oil pan resting on the floor jack and everything lined up nicely. Neat thing about bailing wire is you can fine tune your positioning with a twist of the wire here and there, then get your measurements to cut tubes.
Bailing wire, vise grips, magnetic welding blocks, and foul language were all used in abundance.

I spent the rest of Saturday building motor mounts and coughing my head off.

Mounts on the other side are very similar. the forward brace is different to allow the motor in and out.

Sunday I built probably the ugliest shifter you've ever seen. I had bought a complete foot shifter and linkage off ebay for $8 and cut it into little pieces. It was built with a steel pushrod and the lever ratio seemed a bit high for my Morse cable. So I lengthened the shift arm on the transmission and fabricated a mount for the trans end of the cable.

Next choice was shifter on the right or shifter on the left. The cable was long enough for either, so I arbitrarily picked the right. Just personal preference being an American.
A bit of digging in my scraps bin and I found the bits I wanted to make my shifter.
Pivot has a bronze bushing riding on a 5/16 bolt.

It's ugly, but works like a champ. I've got it positioned so I won't hit it accidentally and it's a short reach from the wheel.

Now I'm thinking about a simple clutch lever.

A nice relaxing garage weekend.
Saturday morning I redid the shifter handle and added the clutch lever.

It took a bit to get the clutch cable adjusted, but it seems to work just fine. I might end up spending a few more dollars on a higher ratio clutch handle. This one take a lot of effort to squeeze.

With the shifter done I went to work on the exhaust. I hit up the local parts house and bought 2 sticks of 1 1/2 inch exhaust pipe. The 1 1/2 slips perfectly over the 35 mm Honda pipes. I cut the 4 tubes to about 6 inches long for my starting stubs. Then bent 4 equal length 90's using my home made tube bender that I built a couple of years ago.

A bit of cutting, fiddling, and I was able to route 2 tubes out each side. Then made a 2 into 1 from scratch by splitting a piece of exhaust pipe, spreading the ends, then cutting and welding on top and bottom plates.

Then plumbed up the fuel pump and ran some wires.

So I think the next mod to the A Mod is going to be reducing the leverage of the gas pedal. There is VERY LITTLE movement from idle to WOT in the current setup. No problem on the Mikuni carbs on the Arctic Cat motor as they had a pretty large diameter cam wheel on the carbs. Not so on the CBR motor.

All I have to do is relocate the adjuster and cable end down on the loud pedal and I'll have a more forgiving setup.

Looks like I'm also going to have to spend a few more dollars on a clutch lever. The cheapo doesn't stand up to the force needed for the clutch.
Better to find it now than on race day.

Can't you build one that suits your needs?

I can. I've been thinking about a simple design I saw on a FSAE forum for a butterfly linkage. Does require some machining work that I can't do in my garage though. Maybe if I can get access to the machine shop when I'm at our plant in Arkansas this week...

Can you make the other end longer? Will you have enough throw on the lever end? Love your builds.
