What kind of engine is in the new car? Air or liquid cooled? Looks like it should be a lot of fun.

It's a liquid cooled Chaparral 440. Not the most powerful ski motor around, but should be a hoot in this little car.

Yesterday was our local Solo event at Darlington and I pulled the A Mod out to play for the first time in a lot of weekends. We take August off because it's so freakin hot.

Changes between yesterday and prior event include
New (old stock) Hoosiers on the rear. 45B compound, so not ideal compared to 25s, but still better than the aged out rubber that was on there
Changed alignment specs. Added some caster so I would get 3 degrees of camber gain and went from a little toe in to neutral / slightest toe out on the front
softened (again) rear spring settings
Dropped (again) tire pressures. Now running 6 psi all the way around

The results
Looped it on my first run going over a hump in a slalom
39.14+1 on second run. At least I didn't spin
softened rear a little more (3 turns out on the coilover springs)
Looped in on my 3rd run
37.432 clean on my 4th run
killed 3 cones on my final run.

Here's the 37.432
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snrw5nu1xtg

That puts me 32 out of 87 in raw time. First time in the top half of the pack.

Watched the vid- FUN! seemed pretty damn fast for such a small course

I always struggle trying to navigate autocross course cones.. must be an experience thing (I don't have much)..

Thanks for putting the link up.. makes me want to go out and stress car and driving skills a bit

It was pretty fast. Based on tire sizes and gearing I was approaching 60 several times on the front half in first gear, Hit second on the back half and crossed the finish line doing a tad over 70.

I lost a lot of time on my launch, at the Chicago box, and on the double lane change box.

Craigslist score yesterday, Honda 5 speed tranny for less than I could buy a diff anywhere.
Attachment:
trans.jpg

Went to pull it all apart and the stupid circlip wouldn't release from the layshaft, so I couldn't split the case.
 Who puts on a clip when there's about 10 bolts holding everything together?

Fritzed with it for a couple of hours, then said... I don't need so save the case anyway.

Cutoff wheel and BFH + about 5 minutes

Only items damaged were the case, circlip, and one bearing.

Now I have a diff for either Mod project.

Well, that's one way to do it!
Though I must say, the pucker factor of looking at that last image is off the chart.

Some people never have anything except ideas. Go do it.
Emissions & fuel economy haven't exactly been areas of strength for past rotary power plants, but absolutely no one with a soul has ever cared.

Took the A Mod out to play this past weekend up at Michelin Proving Grounds near Laurens, SC.
Due to some poor planning we only got 4 runs in
58 and change
55.955
looped it
55.331

Some things about the course. It was big with some nice fast sections followed by a technical element.
Heavy cars fared MUCH better than light cars.
Big sticky street tires fared better than slicks.

I couldn't build any heat in the tires.
The front end is working PERFECTLY. It goes where I point it and never understeers.
The rear end still sucks. I still get snap spins when I go hard on the throttle in a straight line and I still get the rear end stepping out in turns.

On my first, second, and fourth runs I started in first, shifted into second quickly to keep the car lower in the power band. I sacrificed speed for control.
In the third run when I looped it I stayed in first gear and spun out at the turn around where you see me catch it in the video above at the 48 second mark. In first gear at the same spot it snapped out before I even knew what happened.

If I don't sell it, there's a differential on the workbench and some sketches on my desk for a winter project.

Best run from the War at the Shore yesterday. Solo course set up on Roebling Road Raceway.
CRAZY FAST on the back straight.

I was several seconds off the pace. Waiting for results to be posted.
Based on tach and gearing, I topped out a tad above 85 on the back side.

Side pods dragging on the asphalt. I guess the wing works.

If you watched the video, you heard the horrible metal grinding noise.

This is the result.

Next revision will take the side pods off, raise the radiators just a tad, and hope for the best.

Well I hadn't touched the A Mod is several weeks until yesterday. I've been doing small projects on the Formula Skippy and my wife fell down the stairs and broke her ankle a month ago.

Yesterday I headed to the garage to start the teardown to put in the Honda diff.
Yank off the rear wheels and bust out the wrenches,

A couple of hours later I had the suspension off, the spool out, and the original case for the CVT drive out.

tear down 2.jpg

Today I'll start cutting steel to build a base for the diff carrier and create pick up points for the suspension.

Should be a completely different behaving car in a few weekends.

A couple of days ago I headed over to Northern Tool and picked up the inexpensive band saw. So far very impressed. It cuts square right out of the box and I've made about 20 cuts with it on 1 1/2 square 3/16 wall tube. Going heavy duty because that was what was available this week at the scrap yard.

Now, on with the regularly scheduled update.

Yesterday morning I started making measurements from the CVT drive so I could replicate the parts I need in steel.
2 bars for the base, 4 uprights, 2 top bars, 4 bars for the base of the chain tensioning pivot base, and a couple more for the top.

Not a bad bit of work.

I'm off work this week, so with a bit of luck I'll have a complete rear suspension before Christmas.

More time in the garage today.
Finished the diff carrier, welded it up, and slotted the locking feature for the chain tensioner. Welded up the diff cradle/ frame Mod. Started taking measurements to mount suspension brackets.

Tomorrow I have to decide between putting the old A arms back on or doing a long trailing arm setup.

If I go long trailing arm, the upper and lower rear pickup points will be the same as if I use the current A arms.
