Thanks Lonnie, need to warm up these bones.

More work on the frame. Drilled the upper and lower refer plates for plug welding. Tacked up the front hairpin perches, removed plates and final welded perches.

It is good practice when attaching a crossmember to an open channel Side Rail that is carrying high torisonal loads to design the cross member mounting, to S/R, with wider flanges on both the top and bottom channel flanges. I would recomend that you add flanges, top & bottom to the current crossmember, or gussets. If adding flanges, do not weld completely to the inboard S/R flange edge. If using a gusset, then use a fish mounth design, and the welds need to be without any under cut or notches.

I can't picture in my mind what you are describing to me. Are you saying the side plate I welded to the channel should have been wider than the channel?

Hey Dave I think I know what you're talking about now. Gusseting a crossmember on the ladder frame to spread the load. Just like the rear cross member on the mouse frame. I will be fabbing cross members for the front of the frame once I get the engine placement set. They will be gusseted. Any channel modifications on the frame will be fish plated and/or gusseted (or refer plated).

There is point in every build where one must cease fabrication, put all the manufactured br@ketz away, sweep the floor, clean the bench, and mock up.





Placed engine on frame to see fitment obstructions. I say this because I am not building a frame around my donor as the previous 3 builds, I am modifying a frame to accept my donor. Indeed very challenging and forcing me to think way out of my comfort zone, but what else do I have to do.

On another note here is a pic of the diff housing using myself for reference to so the size of it after I've shortened it. Looks like my axles will be ready for pick up on Tuesday. If it appears upside down, I'm standing on my head. Click on pic and it will put me back on my feet.

My real concern is that your shock "boxed design" is so ridged that you need to spread out the torsional loads going into the side rail. By adding wider top and bottom crossmember flanges, it will spread out the input loads and prevent a fatigue crack at the side rail mount.
Open channel frames twist a hell of a lot more then the space frames you have been building.
[AND] You get bonus points for your plug weld design brackets

Did a bit more frame alterations to be able to fit the eng/trans.
Fabbed up the PS and DS motor mounts. Fabbed the trans mount. Got everything fitted and tacked up.

Bit of progress over the last couple days. Took out the lead pencil, sharpened it, and proceeded to figuring and calculating and scratching. The result was some fabrication of trailing arms, panhard link, and br@cketry. Gussets, fish plates, and refer plates to follow. Geometry is not 100% perfect, but neither is the geometry on my 2007 Dodge Nitro (go over a set of railway tracks on the highway at 50mph and be prepared for some corrective steering). Will need to rework the rear floor to receive the front top trailing arm (otherwise known as restomoding ).

The biggest thing in motocross.

Nothing scientific really, just wanted them as parallel to level as possible.

A bit of an update, slow going on this build. Installed shortened axles with new brgs and seals. Installed backing plates, brake shoes, e brake cables, and hardware. Installed new drums and test fit tires. Some pics.
