Back in the Driver's Seat!

Got back from the lousy riding trip and was able to get in the garage for a few days and get back on the Berkeley. Saturday the 10th didn't go so well as the day before (4-9) I got my 2nd Covid shot (Maderna).. I was warned that I would likely feel 'crummy' after the 2nd dose, and I don't know why I thought I was special and would not be affected, but boy was I wrong! Crummy, hit by a bus, achey, crabby, fatiigued, listless... call it what you will, but it knocked me out for a day.. I tried to go out and build, but it was miserable, and I came in at lunch and took a long nap on the couch- something I would NEVER do on a 'build day'.. Live and learn.. Two days after the shot (Sunday 4-11) I felt 100% better, and was able to make some real progress.

So this build is now back in real time; Sunday I got the motor in and the car is back on its wheels.. She's still stripped down, but I was able to go around the block under the power of the newly-fired engine #3 -Sweet!

---------------------

I just registered for a small, local 'rally' on May 15th... In order to do this, the car has to be able to run reliably for about 6 hours; out and back.. she's not there yet, but my mission is to have her ready within the next 4 weeks.. I DO NOT want to be the guy who's car breaks down (see above ATV story for not-coincidental overtones  )

My new broader goal is to swap bodies yet again, which will set me up nicely for what needs done this summer.. The plan is to put the 'blue' (worst) body back on the car and have it road legal, ugly, but fully functional.. This way I can drive/play/sort/ enjoy the car over the next several months, while I do the major bodywork to the red (better) body off the car and in the garage.. Late in the summer (late July), if the red body is ready, I'll swap it back onto the car, just in time for "The Queen's English Car Show" and for Reno's "Hot August Nights," both taking place the 1st week of August.

Punt (underbelly) Swap..

While she's torn down this far, I'm swapping the red body and punt off so I can work on the red body 'off the car' this summer. Before pulling the red punt, I modded the corners a bit while it's still up against the frame. Last pic just shows the red body off of the car and in the driveway. It's now time to fish out the 'blue' body from behind the house and put it back on the car (at least for this 2021 summer).

If you're in the 'patina is good' camp, you'll love the transformation that's about to take place :D

Regarding the two position screen, in case you want to make your own, here are some close pics I took at the Road Atlanta Mitty in 2012:

The firewall

I took the effort to apply Dynamat and Reflectix to these last 2 parts of the firewall. Even with these insulated panels, it will be difficult to keep the engine heat away from the driver; I don't think I'll ever be able to totally seal things up- it's just a matter of sealing it the best I can. There are many firewall-to-body 'holes' that still need to be addressed.. Another day to chase those..

"But Now it's Even Uglier!"

The normal evolution of a built is to go from parts, to raw car, to sorted, to restored, and if you're still in it, to pretty.

My wife was taken aback when I pulled the mostly one-color red body off of the car and replaced it with this acid-trip, patina on crack shell (quite literally, patina on many, many cracks  ). "Why did you do that?" is a fair question for sure.. The plan is to keep it street legal (barely) by having a body on it, and mechanically sort it all the while.. Over the next several months (summer 2021) I'll rough in the 'good' (red) body and hopefully at least go into primer on it, then late summer I'll swap the good primered body back on. So in the meantime, she sure is ugly

Looks notwithstanding, I've got to get this thing sorted in the next month as I'd like to take it on a local one-day rally coming up. I got it out on the street yesterday and almost immediately the shifter broke off in my hand.. back home to put heavier tacks on the mock-up shifter. Back out on the street, she died during a sharp, fast right turn... Bike tipover sensor(?).. Don't know.. add BAS (bike angle sensor) eliminate to the list.. Back out.. Clutch is slipping?!! No panic, just and adjustment.. back out.. had a random ignition cut out.. maybe it's not the tipover sensor? I'll have to come back to it as I couldn't get it to replicate.. The joys of sorting...

A few more..

Took it out yet again late yesterday afternoon.. no tail body section.. no lights.. no license plate.. Drove by a Santa Maria cop who was sitting on the side of the road.. The only thing I could do was sheepishly wave and brace for the inevitable.. Instead, the guy gives me a thumbs up.. pretty cool! 8)

I notice this little death trap has a bad case of cowl shake (shocking, huh? ).. Truth be told the whole car has a case of 'rattle your fillings out'

To combat the fiberglass body shake, I made this triangle anchor that solid mounts to the body under the rear view mirror, and also bolts to the 'frame' dash crossbar. Makes a huge difference.

Help Needed- Do you live OUTSIDE of California? Do you like to do dangerous, illegal things? If so, your help is needed!..

I want to buy a thing that cannot (legally) be shipped directly from the vender into California... I don't want to get all political about how this fuel controller (Dynojet Power Commander V) is able to be shipped to EVERYWHERE OTHER THAN CA, but it is what it is; my address has turned me into a criminal

Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to send me a PM on this board.. super secret.. no one will know.. You agree to have my toxic fuel controller shipped directly to you at your NON-CA abode... you then turn right back around and, tee hee, ship it to me, your new best friend, here in CA!.. Who knows what you shipped me in the box? It could be a dozen Girl Scout cookies! Back off Big Brother!! :ack:

If you like irony, this kryptonite-laden fuel controller that will help my little BEC keep from running too lean, is actually GOING ON A CALIFORNIA SMOG EXCEMPT VEHICLE

So, if you're comfortable shipping a box full of cookies, ahem, fuel controller to me, I'd be eternally grateful.*

So what's in it for you? I will deposit $1,000,000 in Bitcoins into your chosen account, or, I will gift you 100 shares in Elio Motors- the choice is yours!.. What a deal!

Our secret code in the subject line will be- "I'll send you the cookies"

--ccrunner

*no, I'm not kidding.. I really need this thing..

**Below is an ACTUAL PICTURE of the contraband- scary!!

THANK YOU gentlemen for the messages of support during this difficult Girl Scout cookie shortage here in California... your love and support to help aid in getting these much-needed cookies into CA is very, very much appreciated..

If you're just now reading this, it seems I now do not need any more assistance importing said cookies :D

I just read this, otherwise I would have responded earlier. Frankly, I didn't know that GS cookies came in a box with a harness. I learn something new everyday. Maybe they are special edition cookies like Animal Crackers that used to come with a string attached ( no pun intended) to the box. I am happy you got your GS cookie fix. What a great group

I would have offered to ship cookies from Alberta to Cali but in a weak moment I ate the cookies before I could post them.

The PC-V that is most definitely not going to end up on this car here in California is on it's way! Thanks again to everyone who was so willing to lend support and words of encouragement 8)

---------------------

I've decided to bypass the Bike Angle Sensor (BAS) by jumping the green and red wires on the harness side, eliminating the sensor altogether (the internet has all of the answers!).. I bent the spades on a microfuse 90* and plugged it in- works perfectly :D

Side Mirrors

For clean lines and an uncluttered look, I really didn't want to put side mirrors on this car.. I've changed my mind on this because without good mirrors, it REALLY bugs me not being able to effectively see behind me (the one dash-mounted rear view mirror didn't let me see much). These 2 little 3" convex peep mirrors are appropriately small to match the car, and help tremendously in my effort to know what's going on back there.

*Later this summer I'll switch over to a different style windscreen, and at that time I'll rework how the mirrors will mount.

Hood Prop

It will never stand up to a strong wind, but this fragile little hood prop rod should work for light, temporary duty. When not in use it folds over toward the passenger side hood hinge.
