Hi MangPong.. thanks for dipping back in :wink: ..

I drilled out and sleeved the uprights for a few different reasons.. Mostly in an effort to keep all of the suspension heims consistent at 1/2".. The rear lowers are the only place on the car that would not have conformed, so I thought it easier to mod the uprights (instead of having metric heims/bungs/bolts at this one joint).. the thinking being parts replacement would be a bit easier.. Also, I've learned that here (Bakersfield California) metric bolts/bits are stupid expensive, and where I have an option, it's virtually always more cost effective to use standard bolts/nuts..

Focus this time is on the rear end upper control arms.. I'm using the Miata ends on the uprights, but then they will fan out into a traditional "A" arm with heim joints.. The task in the pics is how/where to build the frame to anchor these upper arms, while keeping in mind where the R6 shocks must eventually reside.. The puzzle is the fun, right? :D

Late December 2018

These pics show the assembled adapters/giubo/driveshaft, and how it will be oriented in the car.. Eventually it will get 2 driveshaft hoops (front and rear), and a cosmetic driveshaft tunnel/cover.. As of now, it needs to be lengthened about 10"..

"Aiming" the engine(?)..

Everything I've read says this giubo wants to be oriented in a straight line (as close to 0 degrees as possible).. Saw this coming, so I've angled the engine about 5-ish degrees to have the counter shaft directly facing the diff pinion, but how to tell if it's accurately aimed?

I ordered a gun/scope laser pointer online (about $10), and glued a magnet to it's base.. then I bolted a plate to the Hawk adapter, stuck the laser pointer on it, and spun it around a bit while aimed at a target across the garage to be sure I was on center, then 'aimed' engine (countershaft) at the center of the pinion shaft (pic).. I doubt that it's super accurate, but it's pretty close..

Once I fab in the motor mounts I can make fine adjustments to get what I need.. this step helped me to at least get the engine set where it needs to be (roughly) so I can plot the front frame and suspension pick up points..

If the diff pinion is not parallel to the output shaft, then the pointer should point to the center of the cv joint, which is further foward. Tape a piece of cardboard to the diff flange that is half the thickness of the cv to point at. This should minimize guibo flex from shaft rotation.

I like the pointer idea too. Where did you get the magnet? I'm considering making one with a bore sighter (laser shaped like a bullet) for $5 and some type of magnet.

Good catch! You're right about moving the laser target up to the center of the CV joint (should end up being about 1.5" forward of where I have it in the pic..) Thanks! :cheers:

..Got the gun sight laser pointer online, and the little quarter-size magnet at Michael's craft store...

The tiny, anorexic Berkeley..

The constant, constant worry about weight on this build is taxing! Every time I fab something up I lament how it's too heavy, and if I just spend more time (and usually $$!) on a redo, I could shave 'x' ounces or even pounds off of the car.. I'm finding I just need to accept how most bits are turning out, and move on.. the final weight is what it is.. It's tough to let go of the worry though, as I only have about 110 hp to work with.. the only way to increase performance is to, as it has been said; add lightness :roll:

All this talk about ounces and pounds brings me to some interesting pics.. This last weekend I pulled the Ford 7.5 IRS chunk (early 90's T-bird) out of my Volvo 1800, and since it's now just lying on the garage floor, I thought I'd set it next to the Toyota Rav4 pumpkin (1996-2005) that I'm using on this build (the paint stick is 12")..

I don't think the pictures quite capture the difference, but it's like petite sitting next to XXL, and as diffs go, the 7.5 isn't really THAT big :shock: .. In short, the Rav4 diff is very, very small, and I'm so hoping it works out, as I do not want to have to run that super-sized Ford unit in this tiny car :|

The Front Frame Section Gets Roughed in...

So with the engine in place, I can plot the front frame and suspension pick up points.. I've done a slight redesign to get the control arms to their maximum length given the available space, which now mandates I cut out a previously plotted frame rail (pic).. No biggie as nothing is finish welded yet.. (front lower control arms will now be about 8.5" long)

I was able to get the upper and lower mounting points in, which is when I ran out of time..

...This build will now be shoved to the side for a few weeks/months, as I wrecked the Volvo in the rain last night, and being my daily driver, it now needs my time to get back into form (repairs are on me as I don't have collision insurance on it... I'm so, so, stupid :BH: .. I will not make that mistake again).. Not a huge wreck- a solo spin into a small street sign, but it involves some suspension work and paint and body (pass door and front fender).. As my accident-prone wife said, "You were probably due for one, and above all, you're not hurt." She's right.. the car's an easy fix, human flesh not so much..

I'll get back to this build as soon as I can.. probably by April/May this year..

**aside, a few weeks ago I made a few short videos of where the build is right now.. I wanted to capture it in it's rough, early state as I work to get it on it's wheels (with this Volvo setback, now hoping to have the Berk as a roller by end of summer 2019).. As you know though, it will take exactly as long as it takes :lol:

Because to the new and pressing need to repair the Volvo, the Berkeley gets wheeled out of the garage.. I took these pics to later remind myself where the work stopped and what's needed when I pick it back up.. I'm hopeful that I'll be back on this build by April this year.. Don't know yet if that's realistic, but it's the goal..

A bit of a curve ball..

We haven't moved in almost 20 years, but it seems it's time (I'm a smart married guy.. too dumb to know on my own it's time to move, but smart enough to listen when my wife tells me as much)..

Years ago we moved to the central valley in CA to chase a broadcasting job for me, but as life and careers have changed, now there's really nothing holding us here, here in this place that hovers near 100 degrees for nearly 4 months every year.. In short, we're transplanting our jobs, our home, our lives to live over at the coast where the weather is a bit milder..

I mention this here because as you can imagine, there won't be much hobby car building during the transition.. I am hopeful though that I can get back on this build at some point later this summer (2019)... I miss my garage therapy already :roll:

There will be dribs and drabs as I can sneak them in, then full-on build as soon as life, ahem, my wife, allows :lol:
