Posting here, if log needs to be moved, by all means do so.

So, another project that's popped up. Wifey and I wanted to enclose the car trailer for some time now. Reasons being (1) protection from the elements, (2) when travelling, what no one can see, no one will want to steal or vandalize, (3) when Wifey is happy, I are happy.
So I sat down, did some noggin scratchin, penciling, erasing, scratching, and came up with a bit of a design. Went out and bought the 3/4" sq tube and white colored aluminum sheet. Looking at around 1200 SS pop rivets to keep the sheets on. Easy peasy.

Pulled the trailer into the shop, and started to commit fabrication.
Couple of pic's of the beginning of the 3/4" sq tube skeleton.
I'll keep posting pic's, easier than trying to explain how I envision building the enclosure, cause that's the way I roll.

Watching you progress with great interest, I have been thinking of doing the same thing.

Neat idea, but our thieves don't care if they can see what they're stealing, they just steal it anyway. Does serve to keep the touchie-feelie bunch at bay, though. Or those who have to "see what this switch does" and then you find a burned up fuel pump or dead battery....

I can't help but notice that you have "noggin scratchin" as a separate line item from "scratching"... Which causes me to think that... :ack: Ewww... Never mind...

You know JD, I'm kinda old school, I grew up where scratchin' was a thing to do to pass the time, just like chillin', or jawin', or whatever happened before the world wide web. In fact I still catch myself standing in front of the open fridge door - wait for it - scratchin'.

Just a couple of pics showing the 3/4" sq tube skeleton being fabricated on the trailer.
After doing some figuring, and scratching, I computed using the law of sine and cosines, of course taking into consideration area, weight, mass, pressure, and temperature it was determined that it was ok to fabricate the structure on 16" centers with the caveat that the VNE never exceeds 140mph.

Trailer fab is lookin' pretty good, Perry. Do mind that 140mph limit though.

Wow, it looks like a 2-bedroom home, Perry. It's cool and all, but where's the door on the darn thing? You remembered that, right?

Cheers,

Great idea! Just curious though but how do you plan to get inside to tie down your Locost?

The back end lifts up to access the rear for tie down. There will be an access hatch at each front side panel for front tie down.
Will be able to exit the 7 on the DS of the trailer, I'll be fabbing a flip up hatch incorporated on the DS back end that lifts up. It'll be easier to take a pic once fabbed than try to explain it in words. You know me and pictures.........

Don't mind B-17 Sentimental Journey doing a low fly by as I was talking the pictures

Cut in the drivers side egress/access door today. Should provide me ample room to remove myself from the car/trailer as I get older and older. :(
Some pics.

I suspect you will see more sway in cross-winds.
Might want a stabilizer mounted from the tow vehicle to the trailer.

Hey Guys
I need some professional expertise here, it's more than I can figure out with wrenches, sockets, and screwdrivers not to mention pliers.
I want to get some gas springs to assist my back when lifting the rear hatch on the trailer. I used a spring scale to check the weight of the tubing as is and it's 48 pounds to lift. So I figure with the aluminum sheeting attached weight will be 55-60 pounds at 72" from the pivot point.
What I would like to know is what is the weight to overcome at 12" from the pivot point.
I'm looking at some 150# gas springs (x2) mounted at 12" from the pivot to help me and my back lift the rear hatch.
So what would be the weight to overcome at 12"?
