I haven't been able to spend much time in the shop the last couple weekends. But I did steal a couple hours out there Saturday morning. I added the diagonal support for the main hoop and started looking at how to build the engine mounts.

I haven't spent much time on the build recently so there isn't much to update.

A tubular gusset added to the front motor mount.

This picture shows the mock-up of the removable tube that goes over the engine. I added it so I could see what the profile would look like. You can also see the beginnings of the rear engine mount. I want to keep the area under the mount clear for the exhaust, that's why I mocked up this design. I like the 1" tubes triangulating from the upper frame rail to the rear suspension node but the cross tube will flex too much the way it is. In the end I'll probably drop a tube from the mount to the tube going between the lca mounts. Even though I was trying to avoid that.

I made the left side motor mount. It needs some bracing and a little polishing to be complete.

I follow your thought process. Might be easier if you put everything in place to know your available clearance with standard mandrel bends and desired exhaust. Did the expected strut upper location help determine the upper rail location for minimal offset? Why did you step the tubing size down? The narrower-than-the-drivetrain chassis is interesting; kind of like a motorcycle with the engine sticking out. Nice welding!

I made a similar tool using welding rods through corrugated cardboard wrapped around the tube, with a little overhanging tape to keep the rods from falling out but wasn't all that useful since the tube has to be too long to line up. Hard to cut it longer!

It would definitely be easier. I need to order some exhaust pieces.

I don't understand the question with regards to the "minimal offset".

To save weight.

Hopefully it is strong and aesthetically pleasing when done.

Thank you!

I know what you mean. I had to use two scrap pieces tacked in place to get the contour, then transfer that to the real part. It's a good tool but it takes some getting used to.
Thanks for the interest. I appreciate it.

I went back and looked at some earlier pics that answered my question.

My wife and I have decided to move. I, like most people I'm sure, HATE moving. but there is a silver lining to this cloud, my shop will nearly triple in size. :D  It will be a small step back. The new shop doesn't have electricity but it does have a 14' tall door on one side! I'm hoping to convinced my wonderful wife that we need a two post lift. Anyways on to the build...

Technically there is no building, just disassembly. I took a few pictures of removing the engine from the frame and transporting it to the new shop. This was a learning experience for me because I have been building the frame around the engine and the whole time I've been thinking "I SHOULD be able to get the engine out of the frame" now I know.

Vans get such a bad rap when in reality they are more utilitarian than most suvs. That being said, don't tell my wife.

Your bolt in upper support tube joints. Did you machine the joint or do you have an off the shelve supplier for the joint? Davew

I could see removal was going to be easy with the way you built the mounts.

Thank you Davew. I machined them on a lathe and Bridgeport.

I had a bit of a setback when I tried to move the frame to the new shop. I thought for sure it would fit in the back of my wife's minivan. As it turns out, the roll cage is too tall. I explained the problem to my wife and she replied "Won't it fit on the roof rack?" Challenge accepted!!!

You can imagine how many looks this got driving down the road.

At one point I looked over and saw our shadow. It was just so ridiculous I had to get a picture.

We made it safely to the new shop. The scariest part turned out to be my 13 yo son helping me take it off the van.

I am chomping at the bit to get the new shop set up.
