Small update. Made it out to the shop a few times these past few days.

Sandblasted UCA's, LCA's, pan hard, trailing arms, diff housing then etch primed and painted. Sandblasted, painted and rebuilt the front calipers, installed new brake hoses.

Took frame off rotisserie to fit the body in order to fab up the body to frame mounts. Did a mockup of the front end with new grill. I was not happy with the de-powered Ford rack so I bought a Mustang manual rack, had to rework the mounting br@cketz to accept the manual rack.

Fabbed up the battery box.

Coming along nicely.
Always been a fan of these style cars, just nowhere for me to put one & keep it out of the elements. Same reason my 7 had to go when we moved :(

Thanks JAMADOR, I'm starting to run into that issue with 6 cars and 2 bikes, this one might be stored in the car trailer.

Starting to lose count count how many times I've put the body and fenders on to see what and where pieces need to be welded on the frame.

Mocked everything up to see where to build the running board supports. Measured, scratched, cut metal, scratched s'more, then glued it all together.

Moved on to the spare tire mount.Measured, scratched, cut metal, scratched s'more, then glued it all together. The mount is set into a receiver so that it is removable.

Next project is to make vintage 2 bar front and rear bumpers cause I'm too cheap to buy them. Unlike the the 7's this replica uses bumpers, so there will be bumpers :ack:

Sooo, I went back to the first build page and couldn't believe I started this build 11 months ago ( 11 months - 5 months in Palm Springs = 6 months on the build). Hopefully it will be a painted frame/drivetrain roller by fall before we go south again.

Spent a few hours in the shop today. I scratched a bit then had an idea in my head how to make a decent pair of 2 bar bumpers.
I saved the spring packs from the 1950 Topolino, I looked at them and said to myself "Self, you can probably make a couple of flat bar bumpers out of these because no one said you couldn't".
Attachment:
IMG_5010.jpg

So I took them apart and took what looked like bumper material.
Attachment:
IMG_5014.jpg

And tossed what didn't look like bumper material.
Attachment:
IMG_5025.jpg

Now I had to widen the flat bar springs to the width I desired which is 58", anything wider than this would look goofy IMHO, the bumpers will end centerline of the fenders. So I cut the eye bushing springs in half along with the refer springs. The total height of each bumper will be 3".
Attachment:
IMG_5015.jpg

Now I needed the center section of the bumper to be fairly straight so I had to de-arc the center pieces and about 6" of the inner eye bushing pieces. Several passes through the press did the trick.

IMG_5026.jpg

Then I glued it all together to see what the first bumper will look like. The end pieces will get polished nickel end caps in the vertical end tubes. I also like how the bumper will fit between the body and spare tire carrier.

Will build the front bumper tomorrow. Still need to fab up the mounts on frame and bumper for front and rear.

Stroke of genius, reusing those springs as bumpers is a prime example of locost resourcefulness. Your choices are very entertaining, top stuff!

Thanks guys, yeah sometimes I surprise myself :o

Finished up the second bumper today. Still need to do a bit of cosmetic welding on the top of the end tubes.
Attachment:
IMG_5028.jpg

Attachment:
IMG_5029.jpg

Then I fabbed up the front bumper frame mounts and tacked them in place.
Attachment:
IMG_5033.jpg

Attachment:
IMG_5034.jpg

Fabbed up the rear bumper frame mounts and test fit the rear bumper.

And at the end of the day I put it back on the rotisserie for welding the bumper mounts, running board mounts and fabbing up the e brake mount.
This should be the last ride on the rotisserie.

The chassis is looking really good, Perry, as is the fit of the body & fenders. A+ on the bumpers.

Cheers,

Nice work, those leaf bumpers look great, definitely suits the style of the car.

Thanks Lonnie and John

Well I had a pleasant surprise when I walked into the shop this morning.

Appears the night shift went ahead and metal prepped the frame with POR-15, well that gives me one less thing to do

We were wondering when your two brothers Night Shift and Swing Shift were gonna show up and help.

And it was much appreciated,

So Wednesday I painted the frame black like I swore I would never paint a frame that color again, wire brushed and sand blasted the steel rims then painted them. Thursday I put the dropout diff together with new axle brgs and seals and did a paint touch up on it.

Today I walked into the shop at 9:30am to the painted frame on the rotisserie and by 4:30 I rolled it out the door so I could sweep the floor. Installed upper and lower control arms, upper and lower BJ's, spindles, new wheel brgs and grease packed with new seals, previously rebuilt calipers, front coilovers, front brake hoses, rack and pinion, rear diff, trailing arms, pan hard, rear coilovers, mounted tires on rims and balanced them. There are no rear brakes installed, that's later, I just wanted to get a roller so that my shop is free if I (or the kids or friends) need to put another vehicle in for repair.

Don't mind the front suspension geometry, there's no weight on it yet, that will be tuned in later.

Some random pics.

Gonna sleep good tonight

Looking really good, Perry.

So, you say: ". . . I just wanted to get a roller so that my shop is free if I (or the kids or friends) need to put another vehicle in for repair. . . ."

Are you sure it shouldn't be: ". . . I just wanted to get a roller so that my shop is free for a new build. . . ." [WINK].

Cheers,
