Finally got some more work done on the car. Had my machinist make me the upper and lower steering column mounts and bearings last week, and installed them today. Had to reconfigure the pedal box to get the right angle for the lower column mount.

The car will be getting the proper steering wheel sometime in the future, but for now its wearing a used Mountney wheel.













And finally one pic of my latest free aquistion, a Coventry Climax FWA intake manifold. Cant wait for the motor to arrive so i can bolt them up. It should be arriving here in Vancouver at the end of March.

What is the Lbs. of your motor and tran's?

Randy,
The trans weighs in at 51 lbs, and the motor is listed as weighing 215 lbs (from Coventry Climax's workshop manual).

I am told that the R1 motor is 135Lbs. with the trans and Ign,charging.
Maybe I will hit 1000Lbs??

Did you start the metal work after getting the Front and Rear ?
To me it looks like the best way to get the body lines.
I am starting to think the CMC body was from a 15?

I wish i could take credit for the aluminum work, but i had it done by a local tin basher.

To answer the question, which came first the body or the metal work, the body came first. I mounted the sections to the frame on pivots, then sent it out for panelling. The first part fabbed was the scuttle, then the sills and finally the doors.

In hindsight, i could have bought all the equipment to do the aluminum for what i paid to have it done. But i doubt it would look as good as it does.

In regards to the CMC panels, i too think they look more Lotus 15 than 11.

It looks great. It also looks like the inside of a rear tire may hit the frame if that side droops, but thats probably just the picture angle.

The upper link and swaybar are from Caterham USA, both proper Lotus/Cat parts.

As for the tire hitting the frame, there is about an inch between the frame and the tire, so i'm hoping it doesnt hit. I am going to install some spacers between the hub adapter and the axle due to the 165 tire being a bit wide. The tire actually rubs the trailing arms.

Took some pics of the two cars together.









I was trying to display how similar the two frames are. Both have the same wheel base, both are the same width, the only major differences are the Seven chassis tapers at the dash, the Eleven at the firewall, and of course the body mount for the Eleven make it a little bit longer.

Had this week off work so i got some stuff done on the car. First, i removed the head rest from the rear panel. The car is RHD and the body work is LHD, plus the shape wasnt quite right, so off it came.





Next, took a mold off the other rear section i have (series 1, too narrow), and placed it over the gaping hole.



So, today and probably most of the upcoming weekend will be spent bonding the whole thing together, along with tons of filling and sanding. I hope to have it either in primer by Sunday night, or i might even get one coat of colour on it.

Along with the bodywork, i've also removed and re done my lower wishbones, removed and painted the front suspension, and made up a clutch master cylinder bracket.

Makes me eitch!!!

What head buckets are you going to use?

I'll be using either a pair of 2 adjuster buckets from an MGB/Midget/TR6 or a pair of the 3 adjuster from an MGA/TR3 etc. Both Lucas items and both on the shelf at work, just wish i hadnt sold the pair of Marchal Amplilux headlamps that i had at one time. Oh well, there are Lucas LeMans repros available now.

My motor finally arrived yesterday. Drained the old gas, checked the oil and water, cranked it over with the plugs out, put the plugs back in, filled it with fresh gas, and it fired right up. So, here are some pics:







So, the next couple days will consist of stripping off all the old army green paint, make up a new rear engine plate (to mate up with a ribcase Midget gearbox), and fit the lump to the car. Then, most likely over the summer i'll pull it back out and rebuild the whole thing. Have to change out the crankshaft, con rods and port/polish & shave the cylinder head.
