Jack, yeah I pretty much ignored the claimed concerns about gear noise because there's a whole lot of other noises going on. The sum total will probably make driving with earplugs a good idea.

Part of me is wondering about having two helmets with speakers and mics - I know motorcycles have such setups. With the noise and needed face protection it might be a good idea, other than getting tired of wearing helmets.

Neither of us mentioned your visit to my garage to see the car - or me moving that clamp on the dash and shorting out the battery right in front of you... good times.

Those rear axle shots make it look like it's bent or should I say "not true".

While I know the axles aren't bent I do wonder about it, whether other cars' axles do the same thing. Halfway tempted to forward that video to the axle maker and see what they say.

[Edit] So I did just that, sent a link to the video to the axle shop. Be interesting what they say...

Exactly my feelings. Kind of like riding a thoroughbred race horse at a walk and giving her a little tap to see "just what she can do." Yikes, okay, I get it, this thing demands respect!

Congratulations! Glad to see it driving and looking forward to seeing it finish becoming fully street worthy/legal. It also looks like it should have no troubles in the acceleration even at partial throttle, let alone whenever you're ready and brave enough to give it everything.

Kurt, what rear caster are you running? Camber? Toe? Working on my mid'e's rear upright. Can you adjust all on your car?
Thanks,Randy

Rear castor doesn't matter, toe is barely negative, and camber is about 0.7 deg. It's going to take some fussing to find a balance between handling and tire wear.

I think having a small amount of rear caster is potentially beneficial, especially with the tierods in front of the axle. Everything flexes a little and the caster will add a stabilizing force. TO put it another way....there is no good reason to run negative caster on the rear, and since its impossible to get things perfect, a little positive is a smart/safe idea.

1/2* camber, with 1/2* camber gain per inch bump is probably reasonable. Depends on a lot of things, but typical formula cars have small amounts of suspension travel, pitch and roll, so its probably less important compared to other situations.

Congrats on the drive! Will we be seeing it tearing up the track at the Q sometime soon?
What are you planning on registering it as? I believe if it doesn't look like a period car, it can be registered as a 1960 - is that right?

I'm also wondering how it will be registered.

Quick question Kurt, how close is your fuel cell to the rear firewall and the engine? I'm scratching my plan on building a from scratch car with the 4g63 because I'm planning on building a car with a modified midlana plan once you start selling the book. I'm slightly worried about how close the turbo will be to the fuel cell in my setup though.

I'm in California so it goes under the SB100 rules, meaning that it'll either be registered as a "Lotus Seven" (no kidding) or as a generic 1961 car. People bitch and moan about CA but honestly, it's one of the easiest states to register a one-off car in.

The fuel tank/cell is just forward of the main roll hoop, and behind the seats. Because of that you can easily add a heat shield. A double layer of stainless separated by about 1/8" is a VERY effective heat shield. Plus, the turbo will be a ways above and behind the tank, probably at least 12" away.
