Well, no rolling chassis this weekend either... The idea I had for making the attachment to the balljoints wasn't going to work. Time for a plan B.

I did do something constructive though.

The last time I moved the car, I did something stupid. To balance it on the chain hoist, I ran the chain around the dash bar and the firewall bar. The leverage pulled the dash bar forward and damaged the frame.

Image

Well I worked on making the frame stronger.

First, I cut out the damage and welded in fresh metal.
Image

Then I came up with a reinforcement plate to spread the load out (more cop car metal)

glued in

seriously glued in

top surface ground down

I still have to do the other side....

Next time, I won't lift the whole car by the dash. Engine and trans are coming out.

I worked on figuring out what it will take to get the upper a-arms attached to the frame.

I cut these from a piece of 2x4
Image

so that I could do this
Image

The idea is to mount the mercedes shafts on plates so that the arms can be bolted to the frame. The problem is that the frame is not square with the world...the rails are pinched.

The arms need to be mounted at an angle.
Image

simple enough...in theory
Image

now to make it pretty

make mirror image one too...

Next step will be to prep the front rails for the arms.

Fantastic idea with the a-arms! You've inspired me. I've been wracking my brain to figure out a reasonable way to make the arms I see in my head. I guess I should have have been wrenching my brain.

I've priced airfoil section and oval tubing, and looked at welding up similar, your idea takes the cake!

I'm building a '28 Buick roadster wrapped around a locost chassis with exposed, yet minimal IFS. I also looked at the Miller Ford indy design. Up until the mid to late' 60s there were many interesting variations in design with the indy cars.

Awesome build, been following your work on several forums since you began posting it.

To be honest, I'm still a little scared of the arms. After I get them built, I plan on applying some pretty decent forces on them to make sure they aren't just going to pop at a weld.

PROCEED AT YOU OWN RISK!

Sorry about that. I let my photobucket" pro" account expire. I'm gonna switch all of my pics over to flickr and rebuild the thread.

hey flipper, why don't you just upload them here? That way, they will never be disconnected and future readers can always see the photos along with the text. They will view just fine at 50-100Kb files.

I quit linking from photobucket for just those reasons.

I think I found my solution for attaching the arms to the balljoints. These will be recessed into the underside of the forward leg of the a-arms (a-arm "channeled" over the bolts, if you will). A threaded boss will be recessed under the trailing leg.
