I just read the last few pages and have a few things to add. I am using a 5.3 LS engine I found at the local yard for $700. They had 6 of them sitting there for basically the same price (within $100). If you spend time on LS1tech.com you will find them for even cheaper. I added an brand new F-body pan, used LS1 intake manifold for space reasons, and used LS6 exhaust manifolds. The total price was still under $1000. You should easily be able to find a 5.3 for $500-700. The iron block adds 80 pounds over the AL block, but they can be rebuilt. I just finished a full year of track events (10 events) and how no issues with the engine. It had 60k miles when I bought it, and I never opened it up. I changed oil and called it good. As opposed to looking for the expensive oil pans, spend the money on an Accusump. My oil pressure stays constant through 1+ g turns with that system.

I am also running an automatic. It was OK until my dad made a controller for it so I have full control over the trans. Now, it's great. He set it up so the torque converter is locked in 2, 3, and 4. With the torque I have and the light car, I don't need to shift much. Locking the converter helps to keep the heat down. I couldn't be happier now.

Just a quick update here..
I've got my 5.3L L33 motor, and she's a beauty. Working on switching over some f-body parts, and others. Switching to an Ls1 intake/injectors/rails, have brandy new LS7 exhaust manifolds (which are amazing), all f-body front accessory stuff, f-body flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, and a corvette batwing oil pan.

So not much has been done with the car, mostly just work on the motor itself. Modeling the motor in Solidworks, that's going well. Next will be picking up a T56 and getting that modeled. Then, they can be virtually installed in the frame model, clearances checked and adjusted, mounts designed, etc...

I'm trying to keep everyone informed, but not too good at it.. More regular updates here: www.spartanv8.com

Thanks!

If you've got a scale for me to use... She doesn't fit on my bathroom scale, lol

If you poke around you can find pretty accurate weights for the gen 3 motors... I believe this one is supposed to be right around 400 lbs
here's one link: http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavist ... Dimensions

Looks like wiring is the theme of the day in the non traditional camp.
