The issue with the camera was the transmitter. Once I cut the negative power lead, it worked fine! :?

Since this is a 1997 vehicle, it was about time for the brakes to have an issue. I smelled hot brakes and felt for heat radiating from each wheel. The right rear was much warmer than the rest. I decided to replace the master and all four calipers since corrosion in the right rear is likely to be everywhere else too.
Despite being the length of a ranger pickup, this truck has the most extreme duty hydraulic brakes available for the P32 chassis; vented rotors all around and massive, two piston, floating calipers. The calipers are the same at all four corners. The bleeder and brake line fittings swap corners depending on which side of the truck they are mounted on.

The calipers, pads, and master would have been about $600 from a local parts store. I used Rock Auto and saved a couple hundred. It was cheapest to buy "loaded" calipers which already have pads instead of pads separately. Just a set of brake pads costs $70-130 but they are massive and designed to last a long time on a commercial vehicle. Even the pads on the right rear are still serviceable.

Overhaul kits are not available and the warranty is 90 days on commerical vehicle parts, not that I am concerned about warranty.

The ABS doesn't work but it also does not interrupt fluid flow. It stops well without it. The ABS does not affecting traditional bleeding.

I've already replaced the master and rear calipers. I'll be replacing the front calipers today and take a few pictures to show the scale. Despite the cost, size, and dual pistons, except for the ABS unit, the system looks typical of a seventies chevy van.

The lug nuts are 1" so standard 4 way lug wrenches do not fit. I used a deep socket with a 1/2" drive breaker bar and a 36" piece of conduit to crack them loose and a speed handle to take them off and on(the studs are very long). I felt I was at the torque limit of a 1/2" drive system, expecting the breaker bar to fail at any moment when trying to crack the lug nuts loose. The rear rotors appear to bolt to the inside of the 10 bolt hubs. The seat for the lug nuts is in a separate ring that clamps the wheels to the hub.

Since it is a diesel, power assist for the brakes is supplied by the power steering pump to a servo behind the master in the normal pneumatic power brake booster position. Pedal rise after braking is very slow compared to a pneumatic system.

i just knew there was something i wanted to tell you about and had forgotten. ..

for your rear camera needs, http://www.muxlab.com/products/ve_cctv_modular_balun.html, there are of course more than one manufacturor, this is just the brand i've used in the past to get chapel audio and video into "baby rooms" so parents can feel present in church services without the noises of a newborn making others nervous.

Thanks for the info. Fortunately it is working now. I plan to use a day/night IR camera on the trike with a IR camera on the front to help counter headlight glare with such a low seating position. These would be hard wired versus wireless. 100 foot range IR cameras are about $80 now.

Yes I know, a dead thread, but it's interesting enough that I have to ask, whatever happened to this project?

I basically said I wanted to work on my projects and if she wanted me to continue to work on hers, she needed to be out there with me. There has been recent interest in doing that, so I bought an lp water heater to use instead of the gen set and 220v tank-less water heater. That way she can use a standard extension chord to power everything she needs on-site. Meanwhile, it is being used for the air conditioned space. So many projects, so little time. No regrets about never trying any projects, just not finishing them in a timely manner but I don't sell anything. Each project sits and waits until I get back around to it.

I promised to work on it this Fall.

I just saw this thread. The a friend father was a design engineer for Airstream in the '60's. He left about 1970 and formed a company call Mobilux. they build compact motorhomes using step vans. He still drives his first one and it's really neat. See:

Your van looks great ! I went with something with alittle more power and room. I was pulling my 30' boat then. Came from a movie,it got set on fire. The cabover replaced my box van. She was very good also but only a 350. Streched the chassis out to be able to install the 20' box. Also have a big hole from the cab to the box.

B85, what movie was it in? That is cool. Sitting that high must be interesting.

I like the "Stripes" secret weapon style, 70s gmc or the smaller vixen even better:

Well, it cleaned up real nice. No 8 legged freaks here, just the two legged, walking dead variety.

That looks great Fred, like a space ship!

I'm installing a suburban brand 6 gallon water heater with pilot ignition and a used forklift tank. I bought the mounting brackets on Ebay. Using heavy piano hinge and latches on the 1/4 thick body for access.
