Making that out of steel will be a good bit of work. Looks like several subparts to make, weld together, then metal finish.

Looking forward to pics from class.

Or aluminum might be nice.
On my way.
This is a pic of a test run for the trailer and the tarp. The tarp failed at about 55 and was replaced by something heavier. Wish me luck. I leave at 5 tomorrow.

Hey, good luck. I'm sure you will be very busy, but any photos you take will be appreciated, I'm sure.

Cheers,

Good luck.
My tarp failed after about 5 miles when I brought the R1 project back from Tulsa. Got lucky and it only rained for about 10 minutes during the whole trip.

Hey,

I saw the photos of your buck at Oblong, IL. They were posted on the Metalmeet site. I hope all went well for you and you got some expert help there. Tomorrow, I start my 3-day class with Peter Tommasini out here in California. It should be interesting.

Did you have time to take your own progress photos?

Cheers,

Lonnie

Well I made it back with my buck in one piece. It was a great trip and I learned a lot while having fun. One of the things I learned is to watch out for low crowned panels. A lot of scrap was made before Randy stepped in to give a hand. Here is a shot of him dancing the wheel as only he can. Also a picture of the new hood and my growing scrap pile. Anybody know how to reuse panels that you put too much shape in??

I wouldn't throw one bit of that out if you have storage space for it. You could wheel it pretty flat in most areas and cut other things out of it as you go along on your body. Almost everything has some shape in it, so it doesn't have to be perfectly flat to be useful.

This is an actual quote from Peter at our class as close as my recollection will allow me to make it, "Don't throw any panel you make mistakes on away. In three months, six months or a year, you're going to look at it and see immediately how to fix it. Just oil it if necessary and put it in a corner. Eventually, you'll use it for something." That's 45 years of experience talking, so that's what I'll do with my mistakes myself.

Can you work on your body in your workspace over the winter in Wisconsin or would it be too cold?

Cheers,

Lonnie

My shop is heated but not insulated so if it is above freezing out I'm ok. My problem right now is doing all those things I put off all summer.

I have been busy reorganizing and weatherizing my shop for winter and a buddy who heats with wood stopped by. He was looking at my stump and said he could get me something a little better. Look what showed up the next day. Solid oak and a little large. I will have to use my lift to tilt it upright. I only hope I can move it around the shop once up.

That is a WI bike plate for size comparison.

I'm envious. Are you going to make one bowl in it or a couple?

I am thinking about a hemispherical depression about an inch deep and 4" in diameter made with a circular saw with a 7 1/2" Ø blade. I will sneak up on it by cutting and then trying some shrinks. First I have to hack away quite a bit to lighten it as I can't move the thing without pipe rollers. I am also thinking about an oblong depression that gets shallower at one end. How to easily carve that out I don't know.

Do you have a air or electric rotary tool like a die grinder or Dremmel tool? You have get cheap rasps from Harbor Freight that will take the material out pretty rapidly and safely. I like the way this guy marked his stump. Sometimes it i seasy to lose track of where the center of the depression is:

Marked-out stump ==> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-cIDfe0FfE
