I have had a few people tell me that I will have to see a notary when my application goes in verify that was the one that built the car.
I hadn't heard of this and was wondering if any of the guys from BC were asked to do this when applying for their vins or would this be an 'urban myth'?

I did not have to do this.

Thanks Greg, I am beginning to think this might be a kit car issue only.
I base my assumption on the premise that they might be required to go to a notary to state that they are the original builders and that they just didn't buy a completed kit for registration.

The orginal notary topic was brought up by some of my friends that have cobra kit cars when they went through their VIN applications.

I went to a notary. I had sent all my major recipts to ICBC which was supposed to be all that was needed, the guy i was dealing with couldnt really make heads or tails of it, so he suggested to get a notarized declaratioin for the car. Basically he said that the declaration was the title for the car before ICBC issued its title. It was only $15 bucks and i thought that doing what the ICBC guy said would help the whole process go smoothly, and it did.

Whatever the ICBC guy wants, do it. The thing is, even ICBC isn't clear on what they want. When I asked for clarification ~from~them~ on "Ubilt" vs. "Replicar" vs. "Replikit" with respect to what we have built, even ~they~ aren't absolute. The pseudo-official response: "it depends." But on what, they don't say.

Do what they want. Same with your inspection: do what they want.

So do you want to title it as a replica or a ubiult? Are there advantages one way or the other? I'm getting close to that point.........

It depends on who you talk to at ICBC. The last time I got clarification (admittedly, a couple of years ago), they didn't even mention a notary. If you get advice from an agent that doesn't work for you, find another one. The same thing goes for the BC inspection...if you get the "right" inspector, the process is a breeze. The wrong one, and it can be a horror show. The good news is, there are lots of 'em (agents and inspectors), so shop around until you get someone reasonable.

Looks like if you have to declare anything (that you built the frame/body from scratch in my case), it needs to be notarized.

I have a sheet in front of me now that I am supposed to fill out saying:
"the story of your ubilt Seven Roadster and the origin of the parts thereof (itemize major parts such as frame, body, engine, trans, suspension, seats, interior, tires, wheels and if you have the bill of sale to prove ownership of the parts)"

Then: " have it notarized " and send him the sheet.

So basically, if you had bought all the stuff (frame, body etc) and had receipts, no notary req'd.

Cheers,
Cory

I sent in a bagillionzillion copies of ~all~ my receipts. Probably why they didn't ask me for this.

Sounds like they've changed the process in the last couple of years.

I submitted a large stack of receipts and they rejected them saying "how did they know that steel that I bought at Metal Supermarket was used to build the car" :!: I think they were going to require a Notary but allowed me to resubmit the receipts all broken down by "frame", "suspension" etc. which was a PITA. Probably just getting a notarized statement would have been easier.

Well it looks like I have to go through a notary after all, not because I need to declare that I built the car, but for one little boo boo  on my part.
My brother put my engine through his GM account where he works and because of that his name and not mine shows up on the engine receipt as the owner.
A little detail that didn't occur to me.
