Grr. When I was entered in the Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize, I decided as a courtesy to Progressive that I'd insure MAX (my 100 mpg streamlined diesel Locost, for those of you who just tuned in) with them, and they flat refused to sell me liability insurance for road use because it was a competition car.

There are a variety of specialty car insurers out there (google hot rod insurance, classic car insurance, custom car insurance and you'll find scads) which you'll need if you want collision insurance, but since all I wanted was liability I just tacked it on my existing car insurance (The Hartford in my case) and they didn't raise an eyebrow.

i have all my ordinary vehicles insured with progressive but they would not offer any coverage for the locost, even for occasional street use.

i spent 2 hours on the phone to grundy today just to get them to e-mail me an application form!

I had the same issue with State Farm. I've been a customer for over 40 years and they insured my MG for a stated value policy. They wouldn't touch my Locost. They offered to go thru a 3rd party if I wanted to. I chose not. You can apply on-line to Hagerty and get commitment within 24 hours. I have Hagerty and so far with no claims, they appear to be a great company. :D Which brings me to:

i did try Grundy but they are extremly hard to do business with.

i called progressive and got a completely different story when i told them it was a Lotus seven replica,

it's insured as a special, model year 2012.

Progressive insured my car as a "dune buggy." $250 for 6 months.
