So the Super 7 is built, now the fun begins. First off I need a VIN number. I applied online to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, filled in all the blanks and paid the fee on Fri June 8. Sat June 9 I received a call from the VIN Examiner and set up an appointment for Thurs June 14 to examine the 7 for a VIN number.
The next step will be to get an Out of Province Mechanical Inspection from the local auto shop.
Then I need to get an appraisal done on the car for insurance purposes.
Once thats done I should be able to get insurance on the 7.
With insurance, VIN, Out of Province Inspection in hand I should be able to go to Vehicle Registries and get plates for the 7.

I will post the progress.

Definitely keep us updated as to how this goes. I won't be going through this process for another year or so probably, but I'd really like to know about any snags you run into with the Alberta process in case there are changes that need to be made at the build stage. One thing that's nagging me is the possible need for full width bumpers.

Is the insurance appraisal mandatory?

Congratulations on getting to this stage!

Perry,

VIN from the Insurance Bureau of Canada? Is this a contracted out service in Alberta or an option in other provinces I wonder? I know you can't answer the second part of the question, but is getting a VIN from IBC the only option in Alberta, or just one of a number?

Overall, your description of the process looks wonderfully simple.

Hi Warren

This is the service that issues VIN numbers for homebuilt trailers and vehicles in Alberta. I have no idea what the process is like in other provinces. I'm just going by what another 7 builder in Edmonton did to get his legal. All in all I'm looking at around $1000 in total fees.

Perry,

Thanks. Here in NS it's the Registrar of Motor Vehicles that issues VINs. It would seem that Alberta has privitized more than just the liquor stores! 8)

The process for me was as described by horchoha. An independent contractor to the insurance bureau inspected my car and issue a VIN on the spot. I then had an out of province inspection and valuation. Final registration was just paper week. The whole process took about 2 months as I had to correct a few minor problems after the first inspection, then have the car reinspected.

The valuation was the longest process as the valuer did a lot of research to come up to with a value. He even talked to the company I purchased the chassis from (Haler concepts in Innisfail).

Good luck tomorrow.

I should mention I got my insurance throughCompetition Insurance in Calgary. The car is insured as a collectable using their "Silver Wheels" policy. There is limited mileage per year and restricted drivers (no one under 25) but the premium is very reasonable compared to my Mazda 6.

When you say 'out of province inspection' is it literaly that? A trip to Regina, or is it some special type of inspection in Alberta?

It should be just the "safety inspection" that "out-of-province" vehicles have to go through.

An out of province inspection is an inspection done for any vehicle being registered in Alberta for the first time. Typically it is done when a car is brought from another province, hence the name, but it can be done at many different places (i.e. most auto shops).

Skibikejohn, do you mind me asking what you pay to insure your locost, and what the mileage restriction is? My stepdad's father had a car insured as a collectible, but it was basically good for driving to car shows and back. No commuting to work allowed, etc.

Thats who I've been in contact here in Edmonton is Competition. The appraiser says he needs a couple days notice to come out to do an appraisal, don't know how long it takes him to complete the paper work but I will surely ask him.

Is Haler still in business?

I am not sure if Haler is in business. His web site is still up.

I pay $242.00 premium for a car valued at $30 000.00. The mileage restriction is 16 000 km per year but I do now where close to that mileage. No driving to work. All drivers must be over 25.

Good day today. VIN examiner came out and issued an Alberta VIN plate for the 7. Info needed was the donor car ser# and engine ser# match. Very painless. He also took pics of the Super 7 and the Chevette carcass for the record, these will be married together for the life of the car. The car is legally now a (year)2012 (make)Ubuilt (model)Replica of a 1960 Lotus Super 7 (color) Silver (vehicle style)Roadster
Attachment:
IMG532crop.jpg

Then he looks at me and says "I strongly recommend you get insurance on this car TODAY, whats it worth to you?" I said $10G. He says "Too low, but get a min $10G for now" So I scan all my new documents and email them to the insurance company and now I have an insurance binder for $10G.
Took all my new paperwork to the local Vehicle Registry and I now have a Request For Vehicle Inspection form for my local shop to come and do an out of province inspection on the 2012 - Ubuilt - Replica Super 7(shortened from the above model description due to type spacing) - Sportcar(registry doesn't list Roadster). This should take place later next week.
Contacted the vehicle appraiser and set up this coming Monday for an appraisal. Be interesting what he says it's worth.
I think the magic word in all of this is "replica". This excerpt of "replica" taken from Wikipedia ""A replica is a copy closely resembling the original concerning its shape and appearance"". As far as I can tell the 1960's Super 7s didn't have any front or rear bumpers or center high brake light.

Congratualtions. The first two steps are done.

I hope your out of province inspection is done by someone who is realistic in their interpretation of the rules.

I zip tied a high mounted brake light to the roll bar and ran a wire to a piggy back connector on a brake light lead. It fell off very soon after passing.

Thanks skibikejohn. I took my build pics to the shop that does the out of province and sat down and discussed the car with the fellow thats going to perform the inspection. Myself being a licensed automotive mechanic helped a lot also, we talk the same language. I see no problems. I will have a center high brake light assembly on hand if need be, but I'll argue that I've built a "replica of a 1960's Lotus Super 7". He even mentioned lack of bumpers and said thats what the NA check box is for on the form.

Bit of an update - On Monday the appraiser came over and spent 2 1/2 hours with me and the 7, went through all the build pics describing the build hows and whys. Drove the 7 outside for a photo shoot. Will receive the appraisal package sometimes next week. Tonight was the out of province inspection at my place, all paper work was filled out, will go over to his shop tomorrow and sign the completed paperwork and pay for the inspection. No surprises.
