How screwed am I? While installing the engine last night, somehow the VIN tag caught on the frame, broke one of the rivet heads, bent and snapped in half. The first four digits are still attached to the car, but the rest is on the part that broke off. Any good glues to glue it back to the aluminum? I hope when I get to titling this thing, the inspector doesn't think I tried to modify or change the vin.

Chris-
Usually the same VIN tag is on the engine, if the engine and tranny are from the same car. When the CHP inspected my Locost they only noted the engine VIN and didn't want to see the tranny VIN tag. I think if you have to show both just show them the broken tag and explain what happened. It should explain the mishap if necessary.

Chris, I'd like to second Roy's motion. If it worked with the CHP, the MSHP should be a slam dunk as they seem to be a bit more laid back. Just save the broken piece and show the inspector IF the question comes up!

The frame rails and tunnel make it virtually impossible to read the VIN on my Miata transmission. You may find the same is true of yours. I agree with the others, just keep the pieces handy if asked and explain how it happened. I doubt they will ask.

ok, I will save the piece and not try to reattach it. I hope your right and they only ask to see the engine vin.

In California, the CHP was very relaxed about everything when they inspected Midlana - except for the VIN tags on both the engine and transmission. They absolutely had to see both.

Don't make this harder than it has to be, why not simply reattach it? It should be obvious it broke in half and is the same tag. The break lines ought to line up.

I recommend you take several photos, including close-ups of where and how it broke, and extreme close close-ups of the break line (and how nicely the two halves line up, and how you haven't filed the break to make it match). Show 'em you're making a strong effort to make their job easy, and you've brought them photos to pile in their file, and write up a little statement with dates and places and participants...and keep it all to yourself unless they notice the problem and want an explanation.

That's me speaking from 50 years of chatting with police about this and that, and my experience is, it's good to be well prepared to answer questions and also good not to answer questions that haven't been asked.
