Hi Guys,

I just finished tearing out the engine and parts I needed. How do I dispose of this car in California legally, but still have it title to me? The car is currently in PNO status. Once I trash it, do I have to worry about the VIN floating around or something? I eventually want to register through the SB100 process, so I was hoping for some advice before I get rid of it.

I did the same with my Mustang donor. You do it through the DMV. In fact, a junkyard or metal recycling yard is not supposed to accept your carcass (no pun intended) without the DMV paperwork. They don't want stolen cars getting crushed up or melted is the basic logic.

I don't remember what the form number is, or what it's called, but if you go in with the title and registration and tell them what you're trying to do, they will help you out. Keep that paperwork for your SB100 process. The Highway Patrol's major concern will be making sure your parts are not stolen.

Cheers,

I called the DMV. The lady said to put the car in "junk" status. This means I surrender the title and license plates of the car. After this I can do whatever I Want to do with the car, even sell the body to a pick in pull.

When I go to CHP, I should show them the surrender paper work, and they should be okay with me having the parts. Does this sound similar or correct with you?

Yes, that sounds like the process I followed.

The junk yard will want a copy of the form DMV give you after you've surrendered the title and plates. Having it for the CHP will validate your source of donor parts.

Cheers,
