first off i live in ca, and am building a locost i was wondering if you could get a car 1973 or under (so no smog) and put the vin number off of that car onto the locost and register it as if it was a kit car, even if you don't have anyof the components from car on it. tell me what you think

I dont think that would be very legal, since nothing remains of the original car.

There are a lot of hoops to jump through to make these cars road legal. Call up your local DMV and find out what is required for a "reconstructed/dune buggy" type vehicle to make it legal.

FWIW there was never a factory Mustang II convertable and they were all 4 seaters.

I think if the engine in your build car is from an emissions exempt car and you use the VIN from that car you may get it through. I remember reading that at one point but I don't remember where. So considering the source of the information, (second-hand from a hillbilly who read it on the internet) I wouldn't hold it in much confidence. I just thought I would contribute.

If I were a CA resident planning a build I would find out where the nearest inspection station was and head down there. A visit to the DMV wouldn't hurt either. In most states there is a process to register assembled vehicles, so I'd look into that first.
