...I'm wondering if you can do all the registration in Ontario and have it inspected in Quebec later on. I thought using the Toyota registration would help, but they said no, the inspector will ask to see the engeering report.

My understanding is that going this route will not gain you anything.

Any vehicle that enters into Quebec for registration needs to be re-safetied from top to bottom. Maybe it is not as stringent as the initial kit car inpsection but it is still enough of a pain in the ass that friends of mine have turned down and/or flipped Ontario vehicles because of the issues involved.

A recent example was my SPOA `83 Scrambler on 35" tires that I sold to a friend in Aylmer. He ended up selling it to another guy in Quebec unsaftied and having never driven it in Quebec himself. The crazy thing is that I actually bought the Jeep in Montreal...

Oh, and from what I have been reading the registration process in Ontario is not exactly simple either.

You need to do your ground work from the begginning... The internet is not the answer, you must call the SAAQ... Which can be very frustrating untill you hit the right guy. There no way of going around it. If the car was not built by a manufacturer it will need the engineer's verification repport... no matter where it's from, don't waiste your time trying to figure a way around it. Even kit cars must go thrue this process. Engineers specialising in vehicules dynamics are not at every corner so theres not that many to choose from. Having delt with gouverment agencies in the past, I can only recommend to be patient and willing to discuss every step of your process before starting your project.

I'm not building my car for the road so I collect the info at a snails pace

But then again I haven't work on my car in the last 3 months due to other motorsport commitments. It will be good to get back at it this weekend.

I have located a locost in saguenay got hold of the owner... he's going to provide me with all the info needed to get on the road. I'm going to foward the informations here...

He build his locost with an S2000 as a donnor...quite fast

Im trying to post some pictures but my computer skill's

my dad used to race lotus seven in mont-tremblant in the
seventies he built is seven from scratch copying a old
rusted out seven it used a ford holbay with set of weebers,
triumph spindle and rack, cortina diff , weight 982 pound`s wet
he got it registered in quebec in 1977 he sold it and its still
on the road today



a few year ago i asked my dad if he had the plans of the seven because i wanted to build my own
he told me buy a frame and i will modify it ,but when i told him
a catherham sold for 30 k us. without tranny engine he decided to start building one

he designed a frame to use a toyota corolla gts, every part was used
one doner exept for ,rad, fuel tank, coilover

he got the car registered then built another one ...
so as of today he has three lotus seven registered in in the province of quebec on the registration it says " lotus artis " for lotus artisanal

today i told him about you guys and all the nice project you are building,
my project is about 60 percent done

so here are the step's to registering a lotus in quebec

1. you have to go to the police station with all the papers that proves
that all the parts you have belong to you example if you had a doner
the registration, bills for all the parts you have on the car ,bills for the
steel, aluminium ect.
you tell them you want to register the car they will fill a document
and give it to you it is suposed to be free

2. you make an appointement for a mechanical inspection let them
know that it is a handcrafted vehicules if you dont know an engineer
let them know they will apoint one
when you go to the inspection with your car two persons will check
your car the mechanic and the engineer if something is not right
they will tell you to fix it and comme back if everything is ok
they will fill in the pappers they will send them to quebec to get
approved

3. wait! if they approve in quebec you will recieve by mail the pappers to
go get your plates

Which means I should finish my engineering studies before I try registering it? Damn. That's a few years away. I know of one at a garage in Lachine... I'll talk to him again, this time about registering it.

you can hire an engineer to inspect your car
by using all the parts from the same doner the engineer
only had to do calculation for the frame
because all the mechanical parts were made to work together
so the enginering fees were affordable

Well, I also have some of my engineering friends that graduated before me that are building cars. I can always machine a few parts for them as payment.

Nope we don't meet... not untill now, some people have drop by my place in the past. The only meet that I know are when me and my buddy Marc get together to work on our cars.

As for registering your car It's been done. I'm about to get going on a street version soon, and it will be registered. It really depends on how much you want it.

hi jawfish, thanks for the answer, th only thing is ive read a lot about redistration and yes, for me is, I want it on the road in the 100 km/h zone
not only in the 70 km/h zone, that's what they told me, saaq. seem like it depend of the frame ridigity..bla bla bla. i dont want to really race it,
but i want to drive it on the road, all around.. good luck and please, keep me on news for that.

http://www.saaq.gouv.qc.ca/publications/dossiers_speciaux/veh_modif_artisan.pdf It basically tell you what you need to respect. The guide inform you that the SAAQ, may ask you to have an engineers repport. This is the part will enable you to go over 70KM/H.

You should get in touch with the departement that takes care of the homebuilt vehicule at the SAAQ.

I don't know if they were the one you spoke to ? If not I would call them and asked them if they have specific firm they wish to have the report made by. I've seen one of those reports for a Locost. It was not so scary and basically relied a lot on the Lotus 7 to explain the safety aspect of the Locost, plus the fact that there have been several lotus 7 replicas built over the years. As I'm not yet to the stage of building for the road I haven't looked into the cost of the report.
