If you buy a donor that doesn't have current registration but you have a receipt and the title, do you need to register it before you turn it into a donor or can you avoid registering the donor?

As you noted, the receipt may be needed by the DMV to determine the car's worth. Also, make real sure the engine isn't stolen or the cops will confiscate it when they check the VIN tag. For that matter, make sure it does have a VIN tag, as sometimes they can get knocked off, then it becomes hard to prove it isn't stolen.

That's a fantastic point thanks. I'm pretty sure everything is on the up and up as the friend who is selling it is an attorney, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have to look like everything is kosher.
