Post subject:  What pads for autoX (can't get enough heat!)

Hey guys,

Just curious what pads you guys are running for autoX. I currently have Hawk HP+ F&R and just can't keep them hot enough for anywhere near full braking potential. It stops fairly well as is for a street car, but I did a few 100-20kph in a row and it is startling how well it can stop when the pads are up to temp. I want that kind of braking for autoX.

I could run the Hawk HPS, but I have them on my Yaris and even there they don't get enough heat to make a consistent pedal. I worry the Seven will be worse.

I have miata pads F&R btw.

Thanks,
Cory

I've found that Wilwood's Polymatrix B compound works well for autoX on the 1850 lb EMod car (total car and driver weight).
However, it appears that you'd have to modify Dynalite pads to fit the Miata calipers.

I use Hawk Blue pads on my Miata calipers and they come up to temp quickly, stop the car on a dime. You may get rotor wear, but that is expected. Good luck.

I'm surprised you find the hp+ don't work well for autox since that is what they're designed for. I ran through a set of those and found them to be quite good, but they would fade pretty bad after 5-6 hard laps at a track day. I switched to the "street race" compound for extra heat tolerance and a higher friction, but the cold bite is slightly less. I think if your looking for maximum cold bite then organic pads might be the best. They'll be great for the street and autox but inadequate for lapping or time attack.

Shower thoughts: What if I were to keep the HP+ and just reduce the pad area? Take a hacksaw and trim off X amount at a time until I felt they were at full temp immediately. Obviously not good for track use at that point, but the local track is so brutal on brakes I will need designated track pads anyhow. Use the trimmed ones for street/autoX only.

I've got hawk HPS on my DD Yaris which are cooked from the aforementioned track so I don't mind experimenting on them. The low-temp part of the compound is gone, but once they are to temp they still have good stopping power. Maybe take off 1/4 of the surface area on the pads and see what happens. It's been a decade since I was up to speed on my brake design theory so maybe I'm being dumb.

Cheers.

Could go with smaller/thinner/lighter/cheaper brake discs.
