Yeah, I'm going with a full (fugly) cage. I like Kurt's design for Midlana, so I'll probably do some variation on that. I'm also considering the forward diagonal bars like they run on some of the sprints and midgets. That might help encourage large mammals to take the scenic route over the top of the car. Still mulling that one over in my noodle.

Couple of years ago I saw one of our local sheriff's cars on a flat-bed being hauled into the impound yard.
Roof was flattened flush with the tops of the doors from front to back.
I assumed the deputy had flipped it off the local mountain pass.
Turned out he had hit a horse.
Horse is just tall enough that their main mass passes over the front of the car and directly into the windshield.
If I had a pic you would be amazed that the deputy was unscathed, I did not exaggerate the damage, roof was pancaked!
This on a late model full-size American PD cruiser.

Scale down for Locost and deer.
If you are really worried I would say you need a "DuVall" windshield with the center bar incorporated into the front roll hoop,
That would reduce the opening for horns and hooves to fit through.

Do try to only hit living critters as they are not "Dead weight" which is more like hitting a boulder!
Local gal hit a dead bear in the road at night after some one else killed it, her husband spent over a week in the hospital and she was there for two days.
Late model mid-size car with all the safety features.

'Course you could raise the armored hood line a couple of feet and view the world through a tankers periscope.

Yeah, I pretty much decided that a cage supporting the windshield is a "Must Have"! I like the design that Kurt has on Midlana. With the crossed top braces, you still have reasonably easy access to your cockpit.

This recent hit (my second in 3 years) has me a little 'spooked'. I grew up on the west side of Los Angeles where the biggest critter I had to dodge was a Great Dane. These White Tails are much bigger animals than the puny little black tails that hang out in Griffith Park or the San Bernardino mountains. Now, the Missouri Dept. of Conservation has decided, in their infinite wisdom, to reintroduce Elk to this neck of the woods. YIPES!

Don't feel bad Mike, I've gotten 12 of the SOB's in the past decade, and two in one night a few years back. That's between an Isuzu NPR HD and a 2012 Ford F-250 (6 weeks old when I blasted a Buck at 35 mph or so. I've read there are 17 times the amount of deer in NJ than in colonial times, due to no natural predators. I see at least a dozen or so fresh carcasses a day in my travels in North and Central New Jersey. Agent Orange with hooves. And people STILL don't want a massive culling of the population... With that said, I'm kind of looking at this aspect as " It ain't much more protected than a Motorcycle." I rode years ago, so I can see that that is pretty much true. I may have to rethink not having a full cage... Especially with my track record.

When we lived up in the mountains, there were these plastic, ultrasonic whistles you could buy and put on your bumpers (or elsewhere) that the vendor claimed deer could hear, and would run from. Some say they work, and some say they don't. I can't say for sure, but they're cheap, and I never hit a deer in 5 years (totally anecdotal, of course).

Here's some fancy chrome ones ==> https://www.walmart.com/ip/Bell-Ultraso ... 3=&veh=sem

They come in black too. They're a lot cheaper than a roll cage.

Cheers,

I have noticed since I got my current car, a Honda civic si with a fairly loud exhaust that the deer that I see are spooked but standing at attention on the side of the road watching me go by. Before I got the si all my cars were very quiet and I was dodging deer just about every night. I think the old motorcycle saying , "loud pipes save lives" comes into play big here.

Emissions & fuel economy haven't exactly been areas of strength for past rotary power plants, but absolutely no one with a soul has ever cared.

WTF is that red thang in the photo above. Looks like the Shar-Pei of automobiles. Ugly!

It's an art piece by Erwin Wurm, part of his "Fat Car" series. It's meant to draw attention to excessive consumption, and the chase for "bigger, more, and multiple".

I honestly just think it's funny that he uses hundreds of gallons of 2 part foam to mutate cars.

"Art is in the eye of the beholder"

From here that is NOT art, now where did I leave my eye-bleach?

Are you sure you didn't mean "art is in the eye of the beer holder"? Agreed, that was better art the way it was.

Yeah, it's so grotesque that the deer might actually jump in front to try and end it all... :ack:

My bad on the sidetrack.
