Sorry, I mean,

Basically find 1018-1020-1025 or A513.

I think I would prefer 1018.

I escaped your area in 1989 so no longer up to date.
Markovits & Fox no longer around?
Used to be the big metal dealer on So. First St. in San Jose.
With all the manufacturing in the So. Bay metal should be EASY to get.
Or has all that work gone to China now?

Not sure. A few of the dealers been merging around. In the end, I just put in my order for 1018.

I got 13 sticks of 1"x1" 16 gauge 12 feet, 1 stick of .75"x.75" 16 gauge 12 feet, and 1 stick of 1"x2" 16 gauge 12 feet for about 500 bucks coming. I think I overpaid a little, but I guess I'm supporting a local buisness.

Let us know what you think about it when you get it. You probably found a good source, you notice when you go to places like OnlineMetals they are a little coy about the exact alloy. Things like A513 are specifications not really alloy designations. They do specify minimum strengths and dimensions like corner radius but don't specify carefully the alloy used to get there.

My limited understanding is that 1018 is slightly special in that it has a specified amount of manganese in it which makes it a tougher material. Think things like railroad rails etc.

I built my whole frame from OM's A36 and almost 50K hard miles later it's still rock solid.

I got a quote from Contractors Steel in Livonia Michigan. They had 1" x 1" 16Ga A513 steel in 24' long lengths. At that length it would be hard to put on my Escape's roof rack, so Contractors said they would cut it in half so I could pick it up. That gives me 12 - 12' pieces which should be enough for the build with NO miss cuts. The only thing they did not spec was Hot vs. Cold rolled, but I did request Cold rolled.

Price with me picking up is $199.15

Johnny Tsunami --

If you get to Jackson MI, stop by Alro's retail operation. Cutoffs, etc.

IIRC, A513 is the good stuff. It's considered Hot Rolled, but it has a Cold Rolled like finish.
