KimFung That looks like an easier unit to use then the Subaru. It would not stick out the back so far. What is a Santana? We have looked a bit at Passat from about year 2000.
That is not a Santana box.
Santana is a earlier B2 1980's VW Passat shape that's made in China by the millions (taxis etc) and the junkyards have the gearboxes sometimes piled 10 feet high.
One reason they would be a good choice is because they accept the common VW/Audi 4 and 5 cylinder engine making for a very wide choice of power units. The boxes don't seem to ever break that's why the junkyards have so many of them, might be a good thing.
There is at least 2 boxes here I'm aware of and that's the earlier 1.6 Santana (early SOHC VW Golf etc) and the later 1.8 EFI engine with which the box is obviously uprated as it's pyhsically larger.
One of these or a similar box is used in many Audi's including the Audi 100 2.3 5 cylinder sold here for a number of years as a Chinese brand (Hongqi).
These are the 2 common Santana boxes, the ribbed one in the background and the smoothcase in the foreground ...
