How about pulling a vacuum, and monitoring it. Lighter and safer than any gas :P

Interesting old post. If I'd seen this back then I might've tried it, having no faith in my welding at the time. Five years and 50K miles later, the frame tubes are all intact, although the spare tire strap did fatigue and crack a couple of years ago. Not at a weld, though.

Some of the airframe books I've read lately mentioned doing this with nitrogen in an effort to prevent corrosion from inside the tubes. I like the linseed oil method for an airframe but I didn't even consider it with my locost frame. Brings up another point. Have our frames had structural failure from interior corrosion?

I haven't heard of any... and seen some threads asking that question in the past. I assume that it depends on a variety of issues, not the least of which is whether we closed off the ends of our tubes?

Most of us don't drive in the snow/ice/salt....

Has anybody considered filling the frame with tequila, for future use as/when needed? (Asking for a friend...)

Jim Hurtubise is hardly an Indianapolis 500 legend.

The driver competed in the race 10 times between 1960 and 1974, and his best finish was 13th in 1962.

Despite his lack of icon status, Hurtubise did offer one of the greatest moments of levity in the race's history.

On May 21, 1972, Hurtubise put his car in line to qualify for the race shortly before the 6 p.m. cut-off. Because he was so late to the track, he failed to qualify.

At first he acted upset and frustrated, then ripped off his car's engine cover to reveal his joke. Instead of an engine, his car was filled with five cases of chilled Miller High Life (Miller was his car's sponsor).

He shared the beer and some laughs with the other crew members and race officials.

Any car with me in it wouldn't notice a few pounds of tequila.

To further de-rail this discussion, Tim, I'm-a-gonna have to disagree with that statement a bit. "Herk" was an honest-to-God hero in my book. He took that screaming banshee loud, ill handling Novi V8 special around the track faster than anybody else in any other car had ever done it. Set a one-lap record at Indy. He raced even-up with Parnelli Jones and AJ Foyt when nobody else could touch them. That's what he was doing in Milwaukee that day.

He crashed in Milwaukee while dicing with Foyt and Parnelli. Burns over 40-something percent of his body. Hands charred, face badly burned, legs, back. He wasn't supposed to live. But he did. When they put him in the big whirlpool bath thing to loosen/remove burned skin, he sang "You Are My Sunshine" at the top of his lungs to keep from screaming. When the doctor asked him to "try to bend your knees" he did a squat. Things cracked and split and bled, but he did it. And smiled. When they asked him if there was a particular shape he wanted his fingers fused into, he said "So I can grip a steering wheel." He told the doctors he was going to drive himself home from the hospital. They said no, but "Herk" as usual, did what he wanted. He wrapped the ignition key in a wad of Kleenex, did the same for the gear lever. Drove himself home.

And started the first race of the next USAC season. No, he never won the Indy 500. He did some quirky, goofy stuff over the years.
But he was a legend, none the less. Don't you think? I do...

JDK

Legends can be made in many ways. Some are created by a paid publicist. Others, like Jim Hurtubise, actually go out and DO something!

It's not my article, and yes, the guy was a legend. Mel Kenyon credited Jim with pulling him out of a fire, for instance.

Not just for his recovery and bravery, but also for his, uh, behavior. Stories about his disagreements with USAC, about the "saloon" he supposedly ran in Gasoline Alley... I will ask Donald Davidson for some more stories when I see him next, but yes, that big heart and strong personality left lots of stories that people still tell.
