My old S-10 shop manual say

The UBS is the axle ratio code

The C is for the Buffalo plant

The 293 Is the julian Date

The 1 is 1st shift

The 3.41 is the standard ratio for the "s" truck.

Dave,
You're a peach. Thanks for the info. I'm assuming that 293 is Feb '93.

Dave,
Without your incredible attention to detail, we'd all be lost out here  It's nice to know what day of the year it was made on, but what year was that?

Can't tell by the casting numbers, Typical there is a steel tag attached to the upper RH bolt on the axle cover. That my give an indication, or it can be traced by the serieal numbers on the ring gear.

Dave,
I saw where the tag was. Just a little piece left under the bolt. I do have the diff out so I'll take a look at the serial number on the ring gear.

Cheers

That should be 3.42:1, and what ratio was standard depends on year, engine, trans, 2wd or 4wd, and tire size ordered. 3.42 was fairly common, possibly the most common, but getting the later 28-spline shafts is more important than getting any certain ratio, ratios are cheaper to change. The other concern is width, 4WD assemblies are wider than 2WD, by about 2" per side, 4" overall.

I'm fairly certain i have posted this before, but the S-10 using the same basic axle as the Camaro majes brake interchanges relatively easy, and most of you would probably be happy with the rear brakes from a '98-'02 Z28, or on ReX i used the calipers from an 84 Trans Am, with a new pair of 11.3" x 1" rotors, and modified the backing plates to move the calipers out 0.4"
For even more brakes, '76 Eldorado calipers and late '70s Corvette rotors offer 12" x 1.25" brakes that fit inside 15" wheels. You just need your own caliper mounts.
I would still use either of those calipers even if i went to 14" rotors.

[quote="sytyguy"]Just thought I'd help clear up a few things about S10 donor parts (specifically brakes and rear ends.)

BRAKES

- 97 and earlier S/T axles had drum brakes, while 98 and later had 11.5" disc brakes.

- Also, one of the great things about using GM parts is that SO much is interchangeable. For the S/T trucks you have the luxury of being able to use F-Body (Camaro/Firebird) and some Y-Body (Corvette) stuff when it comes to brakes. That said, a common upgrade for S/T trucks is to use the 98 and later F-Body rear discs (which bolt right up and only require modifying the parking brake cable) and upgrade the front discs.

I admit I havent looked at it real close, but I supposedly have a '99 S10 xtreme rear end. BUT it has drum brakes. So is it really a 99 then? Or an extreme? Or were disc brakes just an option that the donor didnt have? In any case Id like to do a Lowcost disc brake conversion. SYTYGUY, are you telling me that F-body rear discs and calipers will bolt up to my rear end? Am I understanding that correctly?

Good catch Horchoha, my bad. That's what I get for staying up past my bedtime. I should have directed the question to Dave1976
