Anyone know the total weight of the Miata engine complete, less the bell housing & trans

Also

1.6L B6 or 1.8L BP?

A 1.8L BP is about 290 lbs wet with intake manifold, exhaust manifold, alternator, starter, flywheel and clutch. This guy is building a Maruha BP stroker and weighed most of the components.

I just started tearing down my 1.8L BP and can take some measurements if you want.

To the OP, do you live someplace that you can ask an owner to raise their hood for a couple minutes? Where I work there's about 3-4 in the parking lot everyday. If the numbers are important to you, you should really measure the engine yourself. Otherwise, there's always a chance that big design decisions will be based upon Interweb hearsay, i.e. design and build the chassis, then the engine doesn't fit...

fritz,

Here are a few dimensions:

- Length from rear machined face of block to the front of the crank pulley: 497mm
- Manual transmission end plate thickness: 1.2mm

That comes out to 498mm or 19.61" front-to-back at the block.

- Minimum total block height (per factory service manual): 221.5mm
- Minimum cylinder head height (per factory service manual): 134mm
- Oil pan and main bearing support plate total height (to the bottom of the ridge surrounding the oil drain plug): 177mm
- Height of the valve cover to the top of the oil filler cap: roughly 8cm

That comes out to about 613mm or 24.13".

I'll take some more measurements later tonight.

fritz,

Using a '99-'00 NB cylinder head and intake manifold, I measured the following:

- Protrusion of upper surface of forward intake manifold vacuum connection (marked "A") above upper surface of oil cap: 2mm

- Protrusion of upper surface of rear intake manifold vacuum connection (marked "B") above upper surface of oil cap: 5mm

- Distance from engine centerline to outermost protrusion on the intake manifold side (bracket bolt head marked "C"): 310mm

- Distance from engine centerline to exhaust manifold mounting surface (marked "D"): 95mm

I wasn't able to reinstalled the exhaust manifold with the engine on the stand supported the way it is.

I hope the information is of assistance.
