Well I just picked up my new 1600cc Ford crossflow motor from Farley Racing Engines. Real pretty with no oil crud all over it (I wonder how long it will stay that way). Dyno’d 104 chp at 6100. Not as much as I had hoped. Now I need to find the time to match it up to my new used 4 spd tranny and see if everything fits in the Locost. It is a taller motor than my old 1300cc crossflow so I need to lower it in the frame and make new motor and tranny mounts. I also need to find a long clutch cable to actuate my clutch now that the starter and clutch leaver are on opposite sides. Wish me luck. Russ

:BS: Pics or it didn't happen...LOL

With all of the modern DOHC engines being wedged under the hood, or under the bulge/scoop on the hood, it's funny to think that there are people who still have to be concerned about the height of their X-Flow.

Yeah the old 1300cc was very short and the builder that built my car in England, thought it best to keep the bonnet as close to the valve cover as possible. Dang it!!!!!!

They used to be very cheap to dry sump. You could keep your eyes open for a pump and pan. The pump just replaces the stock one so you don't need belts or anything. They used to be like $250, but I'm sure more now.

That's a reasonable power for 1600 if it's still nearly stock. My FF is 106, basically stock but mild ported head. They'll go to 125-135 pretty easy. Starts to get expensive at some point. They also go out to around 1700-1750 cc. That also gets complicated after awhile. My engine builder keep showing me all these things but I sort of forget after awhile. He just built a 2 liter aluminum one, but that pretty much turned into cubic dollars to get there.

I have hicomp pistons, a hot street cam (boy you can really tell when it is idling), Weber 32/36 carb, and two springs on each valve. He took a bunch off the top of the block to get me to a 9:1 comp ratio. You don't want to know how much it cost. It was almost as much as I paid for the whole car!!!!! My intake manifold is a problem that is keeping the HP down. I may do some porting next winter. Going to a dry sump won't help any because the bellhousing sticks down as much as the oil pan. And yes they have gone up a bunch $$$$$$$. I have an alum. sump that I am going to put up on ebay if anyone needs it. Russ

Go for the classic look!
How about just a relief hole in the hood at the front of the valve cover area. You could make a hammered dish to cover it. Over-kill you could polish it before riveting. Dave W

As you can see by my avatar I already have a huge air scoop on the bonnet that is hard to see over as it is (I'm kind of vertically challenged). The air cleaner is the smallest I could find and the nuts on top hit the underside of it. Even if I went to some sort of sidedrafts I still would have to lower the motor.

Well the new motor goes in tomorrow for hopefully the last time. Picked up my redone driveshaft today and I can start reassembling everything now. Looks like my gear shifter is going to be about 2" closer to me which will be a blessing. It was always a little too far forward to shift properly. I hope I never have to go through this again. It has been a nightmare. My hood scoop will have to be modified but that may have to wait until next winter. Sorry I am not very good a posting pic's. My computer guru son is at college and I can barely type much less post pic's. Russ

Well I finally got my new 1600cc Kent Crossflow running right thanks to Dale Elliot's and Harry Hover's help. It took 4 ½ months to get it installed and running right thanks to a plethora of problems. It really goes like stink! Still have a few minor tweeks to do to get ready for the gathering but it is going to rain in KC all the rest of the week so I doubt if I will get very many test runs until next week.

Looks great Russ. Glad to hear you got it together in time!

Look at that, even your scoop has a scoop(ish)!

Yeah I wish it had a header but with all my delays I missed the welding time with the welder. Now he is booked up through the summer. I had to modify my old exhaust to make it work by adding a 2" long extension (see pic). Not the most efficient but it will have to do for now.

Congrats, Russ! I was going to tell you that you need a header, but then I read you last post. Have fun with it!

Yeah after spending tons of money on a motor and then put a crappy cast iron manifold on it sucks!

Congratulations Russ on the engine install, getting it running decent and getting photos posed! All that drinking paid off. (works for me or maybe not).

So sorry I won't see it at the gathering. I'm going to have to pass this year.

Cheers
