Post subject: | RX7 Clutch disc dimensions |
I'm trying to sort out the clutch situation on my Zetec to Renault transaxle conversion (Lotus Europa) and I have an issue intercorsing them together. The stock Focus Zetec clutch is 9 7/16" diameter, while the biggest Renault disc I can get is 220mm (8 5/8"). After going through Rockauto's website, it appears the Escort ZX2 came with the Zetec and used an 8 7/8" clutch. So, fingers crossed the flywheel and pressure plate will work with the Renault disc. But, this is where I need some help with dimensions. Sachs lists the same clutch disc (SD605) for the ZX2 and various Mazda's including the 83-91 RX7s. I'm hoping someone can measure the outside diameter and inside diameter of the friction surface for me. Once I have the dimensions I can compare them to the Renault disc, and if my theory is correct, the flywheel should work. I have looked into getting the Renault clutch center put into a Focus disc, but they dont seem to match up in any way. It was suggested that a Toyota truck disc could be mated to a small Toyota disc (from a 4AG etc) which has a spline that is very close to the Renault spline. But, I'd rather have an off the shelf solution. Rod |

I went to Rockauto.com and grabbed a photo of the N/A clutch. The friction surface OD appears to be the same as the OD of the disk, 8-7/8". I then inserted it into AutoCAD and scaled it to 8.875"OD. I get 5.9 +/- .032 ish for an ID of the friction surface. Hope this helps. |

Thanks! Now I'm wondering why I didn't think of doing the same thing. I scaled some flywheel photo's but for some reason didn't clue into the photo's of the clutch disc. |

I have a 91 NA RX7 flywheel and PP I can get more exact dimensions off if needed. I also have an 04 RX-8 PP, a 90 RX7 Turbo PP, and an 87-95 RX-7 Turbo Racing Beat aluminum flywheel laying out. If you need any info, feel free to ask. |

300D50, Thanks for the offer, would you be able to measure the inner diameter of the pressure plate? Rod |

I had a similar issue to mate a Supra W58 transmission to my 4AGE engine. What I did was download the Exedy catalog, 200 or so pages and found a match with clutch disc size and spline size and count (bingo 1971 Celica clutch worked) Maybe you can find a match for yours. cheers Doug https://www.exedyusa.com/wp-content/upl ... og-web.pdf |

The ID of the PP friction surface is 137mm, OD is 227mm. Clutch disc friction material ID is 150mm, OD is 225mm. Sprung hub OD is 115mm, with a protrusion of 12mm from clutch friction surface (Friction surface worn to 7.5mm total thickness.) Hope that helps. |

300D50, Thanks for the measurements, I've now ordered the flywheel I was eyeing up, fingers crossed it will work. Cheers, Rod |
