Hi there everyone,

I have now managed to get my new 25 year old RM Eight kit home, and unloaded, it comes with a 2000cc Pinto engine which to my amazement, is not seized, but i also have a 907 lotus engine and would like to graft that in as its about 50lb lighter, Has anyone seen this done? Or better yet actually done it?
Picture will follow as the construction begins, however we have just sold our house and I am building a cottage near the beach, so that has first priority.

I seem to recall seeing some UK builds with the 907 engine but not sure a 907 will fit your chassis well.
Pinto is dirt cheap to work with compared to the 907.
According to some sources the Pinto would also be much more reliable.
Lots of Pinto speed parts are available and since they are now "Out of style" those parts can be had cheap. :)
907 is Lotus so cool to use, but WILL be expensive.
Beware the 907 "Smog" Dellorto's as they can be hard to tune due to limitations on adjustment.
Good luck!

I had a 907 in my S3 Caterham for several years. Details of the installation are here:

viewtopic.php?f=4&t=13193

It was a great setup when the engine was stock. When the power was raised with cams and HC pistons, the lubrication system wasn't adequate and spun a rod bearing. One of the updates to the oiling system is to put a restrictor in the passage going to the head to reduce the flow to the cams and use it for more flow to the crank.
The dual carb setups were renown for engine fires because there was a plastic Tee in the fuel hoses which cracked. It was located right above the distributor, so any leak was an instant fire.

Have you looked at the price for replacement parts for the 907 lotus engine. :ack:
They must be gold plated. Keep the pinto, cheap and it easy to hop-up.

A company called "Racer Walsh" in Jacksonville FL will sell you all the parts you need to make that Pinto motor into a little screamer that will haul [Donkey]. There are lots of other places as well.

The Lotus mill is cool... But not 'zackly "LoCost"...

There's a member on the Locostbuilders.co.uk forum called '907' who has such a car.

I don't know if you'll be able to view these unless you're logged in as a member, but he has a very comprehensive photo archive HERE.

I'm sure he'd be happy to answer any questions over on the UK forum.

Wouldn't be my first choice for a Seven (it's physically big, not all that light compared to modern 16V all-alloy engines, not all that powerful, and not all that reliable), but I guess if you have one kicking around doing nothing it might make sense.

If this is the same car I "Missed" when the seller did not take the ad down right away after the sale you already have the Pinto Weber intake, hot cam, headers, a T5 trans and adapter, etc.

I would like to get the T9 box from you.
If you are really determined to use the 907 I might be interested in the whole Pinto engine package, PM me if interested in selling.
Of course the car came from near me, so shipping will be a bit painful.

Are you sure? If that's your major criterion, I'd buy a scale and find out for sure.

"Aluminum is lighter, we must use more of it!" The 907 is pretty beefy...

I really appreciate the responses on this idea, it gives me much to think about, including using the Pinto engine it came with. That engine already has Webber carbs, although it would all need to be gone through before its installed as does the 907.
As soon as the build begins I will follow up with pictures.
