I have attached a couple of pictures of Pressure plate, clutch disc and Fly Wheel and need some assistance in determining what the actual condition of each is. The disc has about .036" until rivets start showing their ugly heads, The pressure plate and fly wheel surfaces are smooth but somewhat discolored. Are they "well done" or just "medium rare"?

It's not worn out but it has been badly overheated from misuse. I expect the springs are loose too. New clutch kit with pilot bearing and flywheel. Looks like a training issue.

My first Locost engine had a ruined crank and block 'cause the driver kept her foot on the clutch. Pulled the crank sideways, took out the thrust faces of both the block and the crank. And was bad enough that it had to knock like a sun of a gun.

So, has anyone checked the end play on that crank?

If there were only a few blue spots, I'd have it resurfaced. Your flywheel and pressure plate look like they are toast. Replace them all now and feel good that it is 1 less time you'll have to R & R the engine/trans later.

Thanks for the comments. It is kind of what I thought, but had not thought about what might have happened to the engine while all this heat was being generated. I have not been up close to a clutch/ flywheel in quite some time (Haight-Ashbury was the place to go). I had just gotten the wiring sorted and the engine running. The only use I have given it was a short trip around the yard to check the shortened driveshaft. That damage happened in a previous life for this engine.
Maybe this is the opportunity to get a lighter flywheel.

Wasn't me, but I agree that the previous operator(?) probably should have been driving an automatic trans.

Just for giggles and sh1tz, put a dial indicator on the end of the crank and bar it back and forth to see if the crank end play is in the spec range. .006"-.009" kinda comes outta my cobwebbed brain for end play, no idea what engine though, most likely a generic spec.

That is kind of what I had planned for my next shop day. I'm kind of curious since end play has been mentioned.

Just checked the Miata manual: .0031 - .0111 is the spec. Pretty good ballpark call.

Well, Shop time provided comforting information. The dial indicator shows a .008" end play figure. That is leaning to the past the midway point, bit still inside the allowable. Since I do not know where this engine started life, I think I am in good shape.
