Has anyone put one of these in a locost? Aside from potentially being large/tall it seems like a perfect engine for a locost.
From a motoIQ article:
https://motoiq.com/nerds-eye-view-insid ... -engine/7/
Quote:
The entire block only weighs 51.75 lbs but can easily and reliably contain 800 plus hp! The assembled long block only weighs about 180 lbs and the fully dressed engine weighs a feathery 220 lbs!

People build them for huge horsepower in turbo applications. I haven't seen anyone build a more modest naturally aspirated engine. 180 at the crank factory but that's spec camry. Doesn't seem unreasonable to think with some work you could be at over 200whp with something fairly reliable. Anyone know about these?

I suppose it could be low cost/locost as a stock second hand used engine, but it is also a throwaway block. The liners are reportedly very thin and cannot be bored or replaced. Also, throw 30# boost at anything and it is impressive until it blows. Throw enough money at that and it won't blow.

As for weight, the gm v6-60 block is all iron, can be rebored/rebuilt, and weighs under 100 lbs.

I don't think the words Locost and rebuild are mutually exclusive. I would not rebuild an engine I would just go buy another one. I got 219rwbhp for $700, why would I rebuild anything?

Engines aren't expensive these days. Especially when we really can't even use more than 250 or so HP?

Gearboxes are expensive, and that's the determining factor in many builds I think. That's why I discounted most of the Ford stuff -- most of the motors seemed to require a custom bellhousing, or at least an advanced degree in knowing what Lima motor had what bellhousing.

I'm using the GM 3.4 out of an ancient Camaro. That bellhousing is shared by lots of motors, I4, V6 and V8. Or you can change the bell with something out of the junk yard and pick up the 90 degree stuff. That makes it cost effective for me.

So back to the 2AR... what transmissions are you planning to use here?

Used is a crap shoot; more so when it can't be rebuilt. Some short blocks can be rebuilt for $700.
