I'm planning on a single donor build since I'm clearly a little bit over my head on this whole project. A single donor build seems to be the way to go for the less experienced. I was initially thinking a Haynes based car such as the voudou, unfortunately, NA/NB Miatas seem significantly more expensive than NCs nowadays.

Are there any downsides going the NC route? Adapting the multi-link suspension seems like a setback. I figured sourcing NA/NB uprights/shocks would be a simpler fallback.

As an additional benefit a 2.5 Duratec swap would be a lot simpler since it mates right up to the NC trans.

I agree. Buying a complete rear subframe and front spindles is much more cost effective. FB has folks parting out or selling the whole car as a nonrunner as parts for a reasonable price. It doesn't have to be a miata.

I don't know enough about NCs. Too new for me.

Still seeing first gen Miata's under $2K around here.
Even cheaper if they have been wrecked.

I'm in the same boat as you.
I have the 2.5L Duratec, and a 6 speed NC transmission.
I'm planning to get the whole NC rear end(1st choice), w/lsd diff, or an RX8 rear end(second choice, but most likely I will end up with this). The last one has a higher gear ratio, and I'm not good at translating what that means yet, but I hope that it will work. They are cheaper as well, and all manuals are lsds.
I think that I will follow this build to an extent:
