 Post subject: diesel donors
PostPosted: November 26, 2005, 4:27 pm
hey i was wondering if anyone knew of a diesel car that would do as a donor car for a locost. all of the choices that i have thought of so far are either prohibitively complex (vw tdi w/ transmission swap), or prohibitively heavy/big/automatic transmission (Benz TD), or rare (chevette/isuzu pup). Anyone have any better ideas/advice?

Cummins Turbo Diesel! It'd probably need a bit of a hood scoop to fit it under the bonnet though.

DON'T!

Years ago the indians designed a desiel powered motor cycle got terrific mileage
but had a top speed of 47 miles per hour, 6 HP, 11.1 foot pounds torque.

lound, smelly, slow, heavy, and ugly...
interesting idea but you gotta ask why bother.

If you are really serious google "VW lupo"...
"Smart" offers a turbo desiel...
Mercedes A class the small one
Europe leads in small disiels....

The Lupo and Smart are turbo three cylinders....
the Lupo gets close to 80 MPG
(If i remember correctly)

I have wanted to do the same thing. I would use a 1.9 liter volkswagen.
http://www.acmeadapters.com/store.php makes adapters to use a toyota 22r transmission. I have an 04 tdi golf and with a stage 2 "chip" it puts out around 140hp and 230lb feet of torque. The same tuner can sqeeze as much as 180hp out of the engine proded you have a cluthc that can put up with the torque. The things that have prevented me from using the tdi is the availability of affordable engines and the narrow footwell from the 22r tranny.

Rear engine rear wheel drive

VW Lupo

Front engine front wheel drive

The best suggestion if you wanted to use either of these is look in insurance yards for a crashed unit. Prefferable crashed on the opposite side of the engine. If you can find one you maybe able to pick one up for 10%-15% of the value of the car.

I don't know of a single decent small engined american car. American flirting affair with the disiel has been a terrible affair. Anything decent is going to come Canada as an import or from Europe.

It ould be a strange beast to be sure....

Check Audi's
Check Renaults
Check Volkswagans
Check Mercedes

There are plenty others... the trick is finding something that will work for you. You are the guy/guys building the cars and ulitamately the guys driving the cars. It would be interesting to see ho it turns out....
