Post subject: Car smells like fuel?
PostPosted: August 24, 2009, 8:46 am
Anyone else have this problem?
My setup is Miata engine (1.8), Fuelsafe Vented tank, Mercedes Fuel pump.

Car runs fine but you always get out smelling of gas :(

Is that normal or do i have something strainge going on ? I cant see any leaks and the system does hold pressure

Airflows forward behind the seats.

I suggest you use a charcoal cannister or get the vent out of the wind.

Many late 60's convertibles had the vented cap behind the license plate.

I thought it was that and capped the vent to test the theory. Same problem.

Everything behind the windshield and the rear upper boot area is a low pressure area causing the gas fumes to flow up into the cabin.
Make sure the gas cap is sealing "sealed". Install a vent hose in the gas tank or filler neck, does not have to be large diameter, a 3/16 Dia will work, and run the vent hose to one of the rear lower corners of the boot. There is a vortex generated there that will displace the fumes. Note that the outlet end will not stay clean and the hose should be slightly lower then the sight line. I would also suggest that you install a "roll-over" check valve in the vent line.

Maybe the smell is from the exhaust. WOT adds excess fuel to keep the cat from overheating. Tuners typically remove fuel at WOT for more power.

Enusre the hose is for fuel (SAE J30R9 for efi pressure) and not water (SAE 20R1 through 5). Fuel will permeate through the walls more quickly with the wrong hose.

A little cheap black paint on the connections will make a small leak obvious.

How about a link to your build in your signature?
