Post subject:  Zetec Bolt on 5 Speed?

Some things I have heard over the years, most of which I have little reason to doubt:
The Escorts all had the same bell housing bolt pattern.
The Escort and Tempo shared the same transaxles.
The Tempo 2..3 HSC is a bolt in (excluding some clearance problems) into the Escort.
Now I've learned the Tempo 2..3 has the same bolt pattern as the Vulcan 3.0 Ranger transmission.

Does all this mean the Zetec will bolt onto the Vulcan Ranger 5 speed?

Just had to get this off my chest.
Bill

EDIT: August 28, 2015
Never mind. I have seen photos of the Vulcan automatic bell housing pattern. It is very different than the bolt pattern used with the Ranger 5 speed. I suspect Ford drilled two bolt patterns in the Vulcan block.

Here is a good site for these kind of day dreams. http://web.archive.org/web/200309071348 ... /tbhi.html

On it you will see that the Zetec is not in the same category as the Vulcan/SHO/2.5HSC. I would like to find out which 2.3 and 2.5 they are talking about.

If you do end up finding out that the 2.3 and 2.5 Front wheel drive engines have the same bolt pattern as the SHO/Vulcan, AND you can find a bell housing from an 87 or 88 AeroStar 5 speed (the only two years that the bell housing could be removed from the tranny), I make an adaptor to mate that bell housing to the BW T-5, WHICH has the shifter 8" farther back from the block than the Mazda M50D. Something to think about in your day dreaming...

Offroad SHO, would you mind explaining the first paragraph of your post? Especially about the Zetec not being in the same category as the other engines. What do you mean by "category"? At this point, I'm only interested in transmission compatibility.

the Zetec was only used in the Escort during the last generation. it was mated to a G5M transmission not the IB5 of the older escorts (and SOHC 3rd gens) and as such does not have the same bell housing pattern as the rest of the escort engines.

Well, how about using the Zetec head on the CVH block and bolting that to the V6 tranny?

This guy claims the Zetec uses the Sierra bolt pattern which goes back to the Pinto 2.0. At least I think that is what he is saying.

Bill, sorry about that, got the copy part down pat, it's the paste part that always gets me. Post edited to show link to Ford bell housing site.

That Zetec Inside site talks about a Granada but I don't think they are talking about the same Granada we had in the States.

Things I know for fact: The SHO bell housing and the Vulcan 3.0 bell housing is identical and the American 2.3 that came in the XR4Ti, Mustang SVO and thunderbird Turbo Coupe is not the same as the SHO/Vulcan. I have 4 SHO's and 2 2.3's up on engine stands in my shop right now. Also have a 4.6 Intec out of a Lincoln Continental (front wheel drive) on a stand AND a 3.0 Duratec (New in the crate) and they share the same bell housing.

yeah, he talks about a type 9 gearbox and an RS2000 bellhousing. I dont believe either were ever available in the states.

The Type 9 gearbox came on the Merkur XR4Ti

The type 9 I think is the T-9 that was the stock 5 speed in the 85-89 Merkur XR4Ti. And if I remember correctly, the American Granada came with a 5 speed option.

Post subject:  Re: Zetec Bolt on 5 Speed?

The availability of the Type 9 is not of any significance. The Type 9 that has been imported fits the SOHC 2.3, which is different than the Escort pattern. What is significant is the range of engines that bolt to the same tranny. He includes the Zetec along with the other European Escort engines, which are Pinto based. Also, the link posted by OffroadSHO states the Zetec will bolt to the early Capri 4 speed, which has the Pinto 2.0.

It goes like this:
The Zetec pattern is the same as the other Escorts
The Tempo 2.3 (not the 2.3 SOHC motor) will bolt onto the Escort bell.
The Tempo has the same pattern as the Vulcan.

Hence, the Ranger 3.0 M5 will bolt to the Zetec. They all have the Pinto 2.0 pattern.

If A=B, B=C, C=D, then D=A.

It's that "Tempo has the same pattern as the Vulcan" that has me wondering. The Tempo is front wheel drive with a transaxle, not a transmission. I thought we were talking about rear wheel drive transmissions that bolt to the Zetec?

Firebat45 cleared that up:

Check out the last post on the page. He states the Vulcan shares the bell pattern with the 2.3 HSC. Also, Vulcans all have the same pattern. So I think the Zetec should bolt to the Ranger M5 Vulcan tranny.

Cool. I have a M50D in my shop also if anyone wants the spacing between holes, let me know. Here is another link to Ford bell housing families: http://74.125.155.132/search?q=cache:OK ... =firefox-a

So, wait a minute here. I have a Type E and a Type F transmissions and corresponding bellhouseings and clutches. Will a Zetec bolt up to them? The bellhousings are both for the 2.3 SOHC pinto engine. And both should have the same input shaft size and tooth count (havent pulled the Type F out yet but thats what my research shows -> 1", 23 splines)

Off Road Sho, I copied this from your post: "Also have a 4.6 Intec out of a Lincoln Continental (front wheel drive) on a stand AND a 3.0 Duratec (New in the crate) and they share the same bell housing. Are you saying they share a pattern unique to themselves, or share the pattern with the Vulcan?
