Is it possible to get new crate 2.3L Duratec from Ford or MZR from Mazda?

Sure it is, just go to the parts department. It's not going to be cheap if that was going to be your next question.

Just out of curiosity, why are you looking for a new one? Does it have to be the 2.3 or can you use the 3.0 V-6 Duratec. (Shameless plug) Of which I happen to have a brand new one still in the Engine line cradle.

I don't think there's any relationship between the 4 and 6 cylinder "duratec", is there? Just marketing.

Definitely check the spec of the engines. For example, the MX-5 application is a high compression motor, the 2.3 is more of a tractor motor that's aimed more at econoboxes. It's worth noting that Caterham's performance flagship, the R500, uses a 2.0.

Call Med Center Mazda and ask for pricing. They'll get you the best deal short of a Mazda Motorsports discount.

The newest version of the duratec / MZR 2.3 is actually 2.5L.

Why ask about a crate? I'm thinking about building a second seven (got to complete the first one first ) but was thinking about building one with a fresh from the factory engine. Honestly never bothered thinking about using new engines until recently.(I guess that is the "locost" (i.e. cheap) in me)

I like theduratec/mzr 4 cyl family. Lots of varations, even a turbo in the speed3 (plan on eventually putting the speed3 drivetrain in my wifes mazda5 in 4 or 5 yrs )

and no the duratec is just a marketing name and the v6 doesn't share much with the 4cyl as far as I know.

Might price the ecotec as well just to see if there is any difference.

Might be worth checking at a Mazda dealer that does motorsport stuff. I know the spec Miata guys can buy new longblocks quite reasonably.

Cheers, Ted

Or just call Mazda motorsports directly, tell the guys that you're building a car that will compete in Solo2 or time trials (you'll probably want to run it so it's all good  ) and they will give you the racer's cost and free shipping that all Mazda racers enjoy.

When you're up and running, you'll want to send them a couple of results from Autocross races or so to keep your account in good standing.

Good ideas guys.

Like I said I never really thought about doing this until recently when I decided to build a second car (before I even finished the first one).

Looks like the second car will have an all Mazda drivetrain (well maybe the Ford diff, I like all of the ring gear combinations that are available)

Finding the real motorsports connection (not the local dealer "discount") is generally well worth while. I was part of the TRD competition program for a few years while competing with a Toyota and the discounts were unbelievable. I did need to provide enough information to prove I was actually using the car in competition and they did require an annual verification. But the discounts were well worth any hurtles required.

I know that Mazda has a MazdaSpeed program but I'm not not sure of the requirements. I'd try to find a number for them or the program specifics online before contacting the local dealer. Almost every dealer is willing to give a discount locally, but I have found the Manufacturer specific programs are generally far better.

Here's the link to the Mazda program. http://www.mazdamotorsports.com/partsprogram.htm

It's very good from what I know. Other manufacturers programs aren't nearly as open to everyone, and often include only minimal discounts and 'bonuses' for good finishes.

Just my opinion based on what I know.

You could likely rebuild a motor for less than you can buy a new crate motor. In that action you could have the cam reground, use forged pistons (more money but still likely cheaper than a factory crate), etc, and it'd be a shiny new motor. Not that this is what you want, just another option.

milo,

Not doubting you one bit. I just never thought of starting fresh until recently and was wondering what it would cost and what would be the best way of doing it. I now have some good ideas.

I have a new 2.0L crate motor available, as well as one with 22k miles.
