Thanks for posting the follow up! This should eventually prove useful to me.  Do you happen to have any pointers to more information on what needs to be done and how to control the Duratec alternator with MS3? To the best of your knowledge, how advanced of an MS'er is needed to do this? Are we talking as simple as either built-in functionality, or even step-by-step instructions that your average idiot who is (barely) qualified to assemble my own MS should be able to follow? |

Thanks for the final update. The PDF from James Murray really describe this operation very well. I haven't bothered keeping up with the MS updates since my build. It is amazing how far this "system" has come. But it does require an MS-3 processor, not otherwise necessary on a lot of our builds. I wonder if a "dumb" 555 timer circuit could be built to mimic the frequency required to demand a set voltage output, say 14.0V. Load regulation would suffer though. By using a thermistor in the timing circuit, temperature compensation could be implemented, making it more functional. Thus, a separate small circuit might be made to allow the un-altered alternator to be used as-is on any ECU system. Alternatively, a simple oscillator IC could be used which would be my choice. by using a VCO, load regulation could be added. Hmmmmm. There might even be a small demand for something like this in the car DIY community. It might be less expensive than rebuilding the alternator with a different internal regulator. It might make a small side income for somebody. Perhaps somebody should do this.Not me though. Thanks again. |
