I have a big, clunky old-skool garage door remote that clips on my visor and is ugly and bulky- not only that, but it just seems unsafe as someone could get into my car and it's pretty obvious that that remote will open my house. It would be nice to somehow wire it into the car and just have it be a small button/switch on the dash that would not be so obvious as to how to open my house (garage).. has anyone done this?

I know this is a bit off the beaten path- but maybe someone has done it?

thanks-

ccrunner

Yep. I've thought of doing this myself for my VW as there is a nice how to on one way it could be done.

OK, so it's a repeat. ..

Sure, it would be easy enough, a proper sized resistor for the power supply and wire a new button on some wire then Velcro the remote up under the dash.

I have a factory 'Homelink' built into my Passats sunvisor, very handy, not only is it hard to steal, but doesn't work unless the ignition key is in the ignition.
I am starting to see these show up in the wreckers, perhaps buying something like that and adapting it would be not difficult.
That of course is an assumption never having tried it myself.
I am also sure there are others that have this option than just VW.

My really old door opener happened to use a 12 V battery so I wired it into the car 12 v system and hid the opener under the dashboard where I could barely reach the button. Apparently the RF signal got onto the cars battery system and it worked fine even though there was a lot of metal near the opener.

If your's uses a different voltage battery just mount it under the dash where it's not visible.
