Ron- everybody with a cheapass wavyglas kitcar put Vdub taillights on making them the sign of cheap, underpowered, crap builds. (The only exception is the Manx with mid sixties Dub lights mounted vertical.)

The Vdub lights are so identifiably VDub(German) that I just hate to see them on a car so British as a 7.
The only thing worse for Me are 65 Mustang taillights.

They work well. Just need to fill the small gap due to the fender radius and the back of the light body having different contours.

I'm seriously thinking about putting them on the R1 project. They're a good fit to the fender

A heck of a lot less expensive than MGA repops

Have to agree. They're totally serviceable, very inexpensive, yet they totally scream out "CHEAPO KIT CAR"!

going to pile on here. I understand the attraction, but you are building a Locost, not a Cheapo 7. Maybe a repo tail light from the late 40's Chevy? Or something like that.

IMO a Locost IS a Cheapo 7. Mine certainly is. Luckily I had someone buy me a set of Britax taillights, but I do have VW parts on my car.

That said, these particular VW taillights are not terribly attractive.

the vw units are at least a step up from a red round rear light or trailer lights.

having said that, my rear lights are just a simple red round light, but i frenched them in

It seems to be a matter of "OOOH - a VW light! Yuch!" I agree that they are easily identified with cheap buggy kit cars. In principle, I don't really see that much difference from the ubiquitous Britax taillights. I mean aren't they just trailer lights/fork lift lights? Yuch! (full disclosure, I used them) The fact that Caterham used similar lights must make the Britax lights acceptable for us.

Taillights are easily changed if you decide to change them later on. In the spirit of Low-Cost, I'd support "Use what you got". That is. unless you don't like them to begin with. Just bear in mind that it is more difficult, not impossible, to change from combined Brake/turn lamps units to individual lamps, or vice versa.

What he said ^

Plus the VW one are about twice the size of the Britax ones (if you care about maximizing your car's visibility).

Big fan of highly visible amber turn signals. These provide rear and side lighting. And just maybe the tail lights were the classiest thing about those cheepo kit cars.
OK, so they are 1) reasonably lite weight, 2) Highly effective/ totally functional and :D LOCOST :D $20.00 for both.
Yeah, I'm gonna give em a try!

Ron, if they work for you, that's really all that counts. :)

To be fair, they will look much better than mine, and you will not see them while enjoying the drive. :)

Well I picked up the VW lights. They are to heavy to use with aluminum fenders so I'll be making them with fiberglass at first.
They will be rounded like the Series 1 fenders,

but with less curve for the wider tires and to compliment the top of the lights.
