looking for an alternator that is simple as possible for wiring.
heard some refer to GM 1 wire alternators, as well Thereis a Hitachi Unit refereanced several times over several projects on Jay Leno's Garage blog.

any good recommendations on such a thing, small footprint but decent output?

When I was switching alternators on TETANUS, I went to the Autozone website, searched for alternators without entering any car information, then narrowed the search to the valucraft line.

Look at the pictures and decide which package size and clocking fit your available space.

I am using a cheap speed shop chrome 1 wire alternator on mine, little heavier than some of the smaller alternators.
On the other hand it works and looks great.
When I first start the car the fast idle is high enough to kick start it as well, so far worked out great.

I know this is a bit old, but I was looking for the smallest alternator I could find and ended up with one from a Geo Metro (Chevy Sprint, Pontiac Firefly, etc) it supposedly puts out 35 amps and it has two wires, one to the battery and one to ignition power. There is a third that can be used for an idiot light, but isn't necessary. I went to my local discount auto parts store and spent a couple hours looking through all their alternators and then asked them what I had found.

I have been to the breakers and got some alternators from the Daihatsu Charade`s for my build`s . These are the smallest I have come across with internal regulators. All these alternators are the same basic size but vary on the mounting lugs, Rated at about 40/45 amps.

That looks an awful lot like the one I used, it is a Denso as well.
